iPhone 5 - Who's in?

Koz, please keep your thoughts to yourself because you have lost all credibility dude. Everyone sees you as a blind fanboy with no knowledge whatsoever to back up any of what you type.

In the meantime, here is more info on the Lightning cable: Apple Lightning cable inspection finds an extra-smart connector, won't make for cheap substitutes -- Engadget

Unfortunately, this is a fairly complex cable...so, you won't find any cheap Chinese copycat on eBay anytime soon. You may, but it may not be a good thing to your iPhone when charging.

More about Apple A6: http://www.chipworks.com/blog/recen.../apple-iphone-5-the-a6-application-processor/

"The layout for this CPU appears to have been done by hand. However, on this A6 chip, the ARM core appears to have been laid out by hand. This does lend credence to the current thinking that this is a custom ARM core specifically designed for the A6. This is a more expensive and time-consuming method of layout. However it usually results in a faster maximum clock rate, and sometimes results in higher density."

Earpods are pretty good IMHO. I have Klipsch S4, Harman Kardon CL, and Klipsch X10i (sold), and Koss Portapro KTC. I actually like the sound of Earpods more than S4 simply because the sound is more natural (flatter). (My favorite is HK CL, but the Earpods are a lot more portable and less geeky when exercising!)

Anyway, here is the more about them: Apple EarPods Teardown - iFixit

They are actually pretty cheap at $30...and given past experience with Apple, you will likely get a free replacement down the road if it ever breaks at your local Apple store.

I have Klipsch S4's as well and use them on a daily basis at work. Love how they sound. Definitely the most expensive headphones I've ever owned, but I managed to get them for like 30 bucks new from Best Buy. I am looking forward to hearing how the new Earpods sound but most likely will still use my S4's.

Ok, i just did an informal testing of two cases vs. naked. I have two cases:

1. Otterbox Defender (black): iPhone 5 case

2. Seidio Active case (with integrated stand) + holster: SEIDIO | ACTIVE with Metal Kickstand Case for Apple iPhone 5

The prices are actually quite similar. I also tested the iPhone without case (naked).

My house is pretty hard on cell reception. No LTE can enter. Texting without Wifi is pretty rough inside the house (texting pics can take a long time). Certain areas of my house (e.g. my master closet) can be very tough to get cell signal. (My previous phone, Samsung Nexus S 4G, cannot make cell calls inside my house, unless you're standing right next to the certain windows!)

In my master bedroom closet, i made several phones calls to my house phone (land line). I listened for call breakups, static, and drop calls.

Results:

1. Otterbox had minimal call breakups and was able to hold the call throughout. No drop calls nor any significant call breakups that would make the person on the other side of the line not hear more than a word occasionally during conversation. Basically, the calls went smoothly. My wife said that i sounded like i was calling from landline.

2. Naked (no case at all) iPhone came in 2nd. There were significant call breakups but for the most part, the conversation went thru enough to make sense. No drop calls. But, there were times where my wife could not hear a word or two during the conversation. It was kinda rough, but doable in terms of conversation.

3. Seidio came last. I placed 2 calls. Both dropped...one early in conversation...the other dropped after horrible call breakups. It was hard to get a word or two across without breaking up. A few times, it was OK for a few seconds than it would breakup badly. Not workable.

My wife was shock at the result!

This type of result was similar to what i observed with my iPhone 4S Otterbox Defender. Very strange. You would think that the Otterbox with all the plastic and rubber around it would produce the worst result. But, somehow, the combination of hard plastic inside and rubber outside enhances cell reception than the other way around (soft rubber inside and hard outside). And it is also weird that a naked iPhone is not as good as one with Otterbox, esp. when Apple has fixed the antenna issue (since 4S).

Well, needless to say, i am forced to keep my Otterbox Defender because my iPhone is also my work phone AND my pager (when i am on-call).

Any thoughts?

Got my 5 today.

The earpods are great feeling, IMO. I haven't had a listen yet.

On the down side, my Entune app crashes every time I open it. Ran fine on iOS6 on my 4. Hmmm.

Is the iPhone 5 otterbox as much of an epic fail in terms of QC and fit and finish as the previous 4/4S models?

Oh no, the Defender for iPhone 5 is damn spectacular!! The rubber surround is now TPU-like, not silicone. So, it holds its shape perfectly. In fact, there isn't much to tuck-in after installing itover the hard plastic because it snaps into place! The whole case is thinner and lighter than before. The holster is also cutout to reduce weight...and the belt clip is also better designed.

Go see the link above and see the new design feature. BTW, the screen protector is also crystal clear, unlike the 4S case. However, i still knocked it out (poke it out of the case) and install Zagg Invisibleshield HD on my iPhone.

Looks better in the link than the current version. Although pink is sold out right now....also IMO the 3GS otterbox case set the standard for protection and fit and finish. Mine was still solid after almost 3 years of use, so solid I cleaned it up and sold it for $10.

Smart move! With that battery sucking screen and inefficient Android, you will need the extra battery! Btw, I would be careful with those "Samsung" battery on eBay...they have been known to cause issues!

I would pay heed to Google's warning about those SD card.

wrong the s3 battery last longer than the 5.

Do you need 1080p on a 16" screen laptop? Yes, it sounds spectucular and spec racers will love it...but it won't make a damn of a difference! Pixel density + accurate color reproduction = far superior to 720p with oversaturation.

it has 9% less pixels than the g3. it only makes it up cause its smaller. bigger screen its a win. how we see it is an opinion.

also, you stating that the android is worthless after some month is wrong. prob about around $50 difference. not worthless.

also, g3 does more than a 5 can do.

Picture says a million words:
iphone5-vs-galaxys3-battery2.jpg

"In the LAPTOP Battery Test, which involves continuous surfing over 4G at 40 percent brightness, the iPhone 5 lasted 7 hours and 13 minutes. That's longer than the Samsung Galaxy S III (6:55) and over an hour longer than the smartphone category average. The Sprint iPhone 4S running iOS 6 lasted 5:54. However, the Droid RAZR Maxx is still the endurance champ; it's 3,330 mAh battery lasted nearly 8.5 hours."

CaliCal, i agree that Android provides more customizations & widgets. That's cool. (Unfortunately for me, widgets killed my battery on Nexus S 4G...because some of the apps were not ICS-compliant, e.g. Weather Channel widget.)

As for screen, yes, the GS3 has a much bigger screen. For some, that is good; others, that is too much. I belong in the latter camp because i carry my phones on my hip via holster (see Otterbox Defender). The iPhone 5 and Defender are already approaching limits of comfort when getting in and out of my car.

Although your SAMOLED screen has nice resolution (720p) and big, it still fails in terms of color accuracy and battery draining. The color pop (which is very good for some people) and bleed (bad for everyone) are ever present. Samsung keeps on ramping up the color saturation with every version of OLED...probably to wow people on first encounter. But, as noted in DisplayMate testings, SAMOLED is far behind IPS LCD (esp. Apple iPhone 5) in terms of crispness/sharpness and color accuracy.

In addition, Samsung still uses PenTile subpixel layout. Want to know the difference?
One-S-One-X-Screens-theverge.jpg

This is an extreme example to show the point. This is a picture comparing the PenTile Super AMOLED display of the One S with the RGB stripe Super LCD 2 found on the HTC One X. GS3 screen is a bit better than HTC One S, but this is why people do not like Pentile display.

The reason Samsung is still using PenTile display (despite others moving away from it) is that it gives a brighter display and apparently slow down premature OLED degradation, which is a very significant problem with OLED.

The bottom line is that iPhone 5 display is state-of-the-art (screen & touch sensor in one) and gives a much better (more accurate, less reflection, and sharper; thus Retina Display) picture than SAMOLED. It is simply a better display. But, yes, it is smaller than GS3's display. Size is the only thing in favor of GS3's display.

EDIT: according to CNET article:
"With HD Super AMOLED, Samsung seems to have backed away from Super AMOLED Plus, with its RGB layout, and returned to Super AMOLED and its PenTile subpixel array -- a move that's disappointing some followers. Plenty of CNET readers and other smartphone enthusiasts have complained that Samsung isn't putting its best technology forward, reverting from the "Plus" screen in the Galaxy S II to the regular PenTile screen in Sammy's next flagship phone, the Galaxy S III.

Although Samsung didn't comment for this piece, an employee of Samsung America (but not Samsung Display) has said elsewhere that Samsung selected PenTile for its durability. In addition, Samsung calling the 1,280x720-pixel PenTile screen resolution "HD Super AMOLED" is a marketing exaggeration that can mislead consumers, says DisplayMate's Soneira, chiefly because of those fewer subpixels than a standard 1,280x720-pixel RGB high-definition display. While the naked eye may not notice the difference in photos and videos that are inherently fuzzy, the much smaller number of subpixels is noticeable in the presence of fine text and graphics, Soneira maintains, particularly if they're colored.

So while HD Super AMOLED is certainly HD by the definition of resolution, it's not necessarily as fine as other screens. PenTile does have its pluses. It's cheaper to make than Super AMOLED Plus (Samsung can then pass the savings on to you) and it has some battery-saving efficiencies, since there are fewer subpixels that the battery has to power."

Here are some earlier posts to explain what i wrote:
Can you get a profit with any Android phone? No.

However, i will play your game...lets compare two equivalent product. Galaxy S2 retails for $600 for 16 GB (ATT model). iPhone 4S 16 GB (ATT) retails for $650.

Amazon will give you $370 (like new condition) or $314.50 (good) for iPhone 4S 16GB AT&T.

Amazon will give you $80 (like new) or $68 (good) for Samsung Galaxy S II GT-I9100 Unlocked Phone with 8MP Camera and Touchscreen - International Version (Black). For non-International model, max price is $68 (like new).

Not even close!

More info. According to Sprint Buyback program:

Samsung S3 16GB Blue $128 (this is iPhone 5's competitor)
Samsung S3 16GB White $132

Galaxy Nexus $140

Samsung Epic 4G Touch $93 (This is Sprint's Galaxy S2 version; iPhone 4S competitor)

Apple iPhone 4S 16GB $253
Apple iPhone 4 8GB $139

Note: Apple iPhone 4S equivalent is the Epic 4G Touch (GS 2). Apple iPhone 5's equivalent is the Samsung S3.

Basically, the 4S is already more valuable on the USED market than Galaxy S3, which was just released a few months ago!!

Hell, even Apple's TWO generation old iPhone (iPhone 4 8gb) is worth more than the latest & greatest Samsung Android phone (GS3)!!

I was going to tell you not to try and tell him he is wrong because he will find some test that shows he is right (which he is NOT). But he beat me to it and (sure enough) he posted it. This is how Thai operates. He is ALWAYS right and he always has the best and he will find some way and twist/intrepid info to show that (side affects from the cool-aid). Again, don't waste your time!

The S3 will run longer then the i5, this is FACT! This is one of the examples where the i5 is ALMOST equal to the S3.

Damn all these facts from big independent sources!! :D. Feel free to prove me wrong. You've been trying and failing miserably!

Its funny how Apple was serving the cool-aid flavor of how the screen size (3.5")of the iphone was the perfect size that God intended and now they are making the same claim with their new size (4"). Same goes for the God chosen satuation rate (their cool-aid flavor was "It is the most accurate true color". But after you put an iphone next to a droid phone and people preferred the droid because everything looked pail, now all of a sudden "to be even more accurate" they increase the saturation 40% (whatever %). I'm sure Thai can explain this so we can understand these changes!

So pathetic. Read the independent facts dude. Last post to Koz. There is no logic to what you say. It is scary how blind and bias you are! :( It is funny that he accuses me of finding info in my favor, yet he is the one that is searching blogs and opinions throughout the web for stuff in his favor!! That is a sign of desperation. For him, everyone is against Android (and Lexus), including Android Central!! :D

The only advantage the i5 (display) has is brightness and this was addressed in jelly bean.

I curious as to the flavor of cool-aid that will be served when the S3/jelly bean crushes the i5, when they are put head to head!

What! you don't have the power to delete post that don't agree with your opinion?

:sobbing: I'm not going to post anymore to Koz, he's scaring me. lol
