iPhones and Entune

After updating to the newest iOS 11, my head unit is no longer displaying artist/song title/etc. I can still play music through bluetooth, however, nothing displays. I can't play anything through USB, it will start to play the song at the top of my library and then just continuously restart the same song about every 10 seconds while continuing to give me a "connection error" message. If I select a different song, it will play about 5-10 seconds of it and then go right back to the song at the top of the playlist. Is anyone else having a similar issue that they've found a fix for?

Just some thoughts, have you done the recent update to the head unit with the entune app? I would start there, then maybe do the ECU master reset. (battery disconnected for 4 hours). On a side note I think the USB option is the best for playing music, sounds better than Bluetooth.

Same thing going on with my 2014. Need to set up an appointment with the dealer to see if there's an update. Had it updated by the dealer a year or two again that cleared up some issues we were having with it then. I don't understand why Toyota can't figure out how to make a radio that just works. I have an 8 year old Pioneer touch screen in my 4th gen that works with every phone, ipod, etc., every time no problem.

this was happening to mine as well. For both my work cell and personal cell. I reinstalled IOS 11 on the phones themselves, updated the Etune App (also log in to the app) and that solved my problem. I did have a system update not long ago either so that may have helped

Are you guys just having the dealer update entune? If so, is this something they charge for? If you are doing it on your own, is it something you can just load onto a USB drive?

You can do it yourself with the entune app. Just log in and connect your phone to your truck. Best if the phone is connected to wifi. It will automatically do the update when you start the truck. This is for 2014 and up I believe.

Toyota released firmware updates for user access so that you don't have to go to the dealer. I believe this is different than the updates that are occasionally done though the phone. Worth checking your vehicle info on the website to see if you're up to date.

Okay, a little off topic, but can anyone explain to me what the purpose of Entune is and why I should use it? I see it can use apps like Pandora, but why would I care about running an app to run another app when the phone connects via Bluetooth anyway? Why not just run from your phone exclusively? The controls on the wheel still work for changing tracks from what I have seen so far. Just asking so I have a better understanding on it. Thanks.

The purpose of Entune is to frustrate its users. :rofl:

I also don't understand why people want to see the songs titles whatever on the low res head unit screen. They are on your phone already and look a lot better than the crappy head unit.

The Pandora app (through entune) allows you to like your song, but you dont have to hold the phone. I think it does a few other things as well, like display your albums I use it sometimes on longer trips.

You can use various apps such as yelp, pandora, and check nearby gas prices and get directions to the chosen gas station with entune.
All of the above can be done through the head unit and you don’t have to use your phone.

Not sure if the above functions will still work withouth the phone app though

So after downloading and installing the most recent entune update, the problem remains. I may attempt a firmware update, but if that doesn't do the trick I guess I'll just live with it til the next time I need to take the car to the dealer.

Do a hard restart (not reset) of your phone, and also check bluetooth setting on the phone- Once connected to Toyota Entune, press the arrow to the right next to "Toyota entune connected", on your iphone. Make sure all the data points that can be sent to your entune are active (messages, display.... etc). I am a Beta tester and Developer for Apple. With the exception of the GM, and one other Beta version, the Streaming info was striped from Apple Music to my entune, but the GM and current Beta are working fine.

You download the firmware update from the link above and save it to a blank flash drive. Follow the install instructions exactly. The flash drive goes into the USB port on the console. It is different than the download & update done over the phone data link.

Magically, this morning, everything seems to have returned to normal and I can now see song/artist/etc. on the display.

I'm surprised at the hate for the headunit. I've driven a lot of the major brands as rental cars lately and I'm always thankful to get back to my 4Runner.

One note though, don't use Entune, don't log in to it on your phone, and don't set up the Entune connection to the unit. You're phone + bluetooth is much more capable and can be controlled largely eyes free or at the very least during a red light. Bluetooth is instantaneous and simple. Entune adds an additional step and an additional point for failure.

I've seen the the tech on everything from 2017 Audi A5s & A6s, '17 Lexus ES, Premium Chevy Impalas, GMC Yukon XLs, and randomly topline Kia Sorentos. The 4runner unit is more consistent, easier to control, and faster at responding to commands.

Tl;dr DON'T USE ENTUNE FEATURES, JUST USE BLUETOOTH

I agree, the toyota head unit is not bad. But after recently riding in a new VW Golf that has VW Net App Connect which allows you to switch between Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a brand agnostic screen mirroring tech, my eyes have been opened as to how limited the Toyota unit really is in comparison to technology that is out there today.
