iPhones and Entune

I went from a 2013 Sequoia SR5 with a sad, sad head unit to my new-to-me 2016 Trail, and it felt like i went from a 13" b&w tube TV with rabbit ears that comes free when you open a checking account at the local savings & loan, to a 65" HDTV w/ one of those robot butlers from Rocky 3!
 
If you guys have a pretty decent speaker setup one drawback of Bluetooth is the audio quality. You can hear a pretty big difference when playing a HD streamed song via a wired connection. I need to update my Entune because my hard connection stopped working a while ago.
 
So I have recently purchased a new iPhone and I no longer get text messages popping up. I’ve gone into settings and selected messages several time with no luck. Any recommendations?
 
You mention that youve gone into settings,...but have you turned on the notifications in the Bluetooth settings for the TOYOTA?
 
The phone is paired with the vehicle. Everything works except incoming messages are not displayed. This occurred after I replaced my phone.
 
I dove into the Bluetooth setting and found where the Show Notifications was not turned on. Thanks for the assist.

I recently got a new iPhone as well and have been experiencing this intermittently. Bluetooth settings for both the truck and phone are correct but sometimes I won't get a notification and other times it'll pop up but the window will be blank. It only happens for texts that I've noticed... anyone got any tips?

Previous phone was Android and it worked fine... :behindsofa:
 
I'm glad I'm not the only one lately having this issue.

Since iOS 11, the head unit has been acting like a spoiled brat, intermittently giving me a connection error every time I connect via USB. Now that I have an iPhoneX with 11.1.2, I've had some interesting issues.

I switched to spotify from apple music this weekend. I deleted my apple music app since they allow us to do that now. Well, apparently the apple music app is how our head units access our phones. The app makes our phone appear as if it were an ipod and allows the head unit to gain control that way. Once I reinstalled the apple music app, it recognized the device.... sporadically.

Now without fail, every time I plug in my phone to the USB (which is my workflow, please don't tell me to just use bluetooth) I get a "failed to connect" error. I have to have something playing on the phone, and then the head unit will decide whether or not to connect.

I took a couple swats at a fix which included:
  • Updating the Entune software once successfully connected to the head unit.
  • Discovering there's a head unit firmware update thanks to a reddit commenter. Updated firmware via a USB thumbdrive.

Neither of these updates did anything cosmetic to the Entune functionality or the head unit functionality. I am still getting frequent connection errors when plugging the phone in via USB.

I have no faith at all in my dealer to understand or even know what the hell I am talking about if I were to take this in. Last time I had technical request, their one "computer" guy didn't know how to change the default settings I requested to have changed out of the owner's manual.

Later when I asked if there was a software update for the head unit, the same one and only "computer guy" didn't understand that I was talking about something other than the $170 map update. He literally didn't know the head unit software and mapping were two totally different things. He told me "I just plug my laptop into the car and click where it tells me to click."

Update failed?

So I updated the firmware via USB per the instruction on the previously provided link.
Unfortunately, my head unit is stuck at the toyota logo and will not do anything else.
Tried turning off the car, cycling the radio off and on, pulling the USB, pulling the MicroSD...
Any ideas on how to kickstart my system? Going to have a long ride home tonight otherwise :(

Press and hold the VOLUME knob down, and see if it forces a reset.
 
OK, so good news to report. I let the thing sit outside my office for 3.5 hrs before reconnecting the battery cable. Not only did it boot up normally with the upgraded firmware, version 0101D7, but all my presets and bluetooth connections are intact. All previous destinations in the NAV are still there.
I didn't even have a legit reason to upgrade the firmware since the Entune system has worked just fine for me, so I dodged a bullet for sure.

I am replying to this thread because I'm new and desperate for help. I have a 2017 4Runner TRD ORP and I simply cannot play ANY streaming music (Spotify/Pandora) using my USB on my iPhone 6s. I even brought my vehicle to the dealer, they updated the head unit, and I still have no luck. They said it was my phone, so I utilized Apple's advice, reset my phone and still no luck. I have the Entune and Apple Music apps on my phone, although I use neither. Does anyone have this problem? Can anyone help? I want to play Spotify through USB and get better sound quality. Thank you in advance.

Edit; I couldn't find anything else on this forum that has helped or is relevant so this is why I am posting.

Does your iPhone show up on the Entune screen after you plug it in?

Yes. Entune recognizes it as iPhone when I plug it in and then proceeds to deliver the message "There are no songs available for playback. Please add compatible files to your iPod."

It seems like other people are able to stream music and not have it physically located on their device. Am I missing something?

Cool, what comes next is not intended to insult your intelligence! Have you cranked the volume on both the phone and the head unit? Did you get any audio? Did you disable bluetooth just to be sure it isn't trying to play via bluetooth?
