Is it absolutely stupid that I want to buy a winch just because it looks cool?

Greenlane Offroad makes a pretty slick aluminum winch bumper also - 14+ 4Runner Stump Aluminum Winch Bumper — GreenLane Offroad.

That really doesn't look bad at all but it's not like it saves a ton of weight and added cost. It's only 10-12lbs lighter then the SSO steel bumper, doesn't allow the addition of high clearance option, doesn't come with a light bar, not as strong, and cost well over $100 more. I think I'd have to go steel. Not like 10lbs is going to make a difference but it's definitely and option.

If you want it (even cause it looks cool) and it doesn't break the bank/budget/takeaway from other things in your life. DO IT!

BUT, don't try to justify it with resale. Mods are almost never going to make sense from that POV.

Looks like it’s canadian dollars so probably comes out cheaper depending on shipping cost.

My girlfriend seems to think so. I love the way they look. Anytime I see a 4runner with a tough front bumper and a winch, I think, I want that. But there's a good chance I would literally never use it. Thoughts? I'm not a rich person, but a couple thousand wouldn't exactly break us, and I feel like I could make up for some of it on resale.

I just installed a better radio. Kenwood with CarPlay and Focal speakers all around. With some vibration mats in doors sounds quite better than Limited’s JBL.

Ventilated seats are cool. Pun intended. But Katskinz with a ventilation unit is a bit too much - and I do get into car when muddy. Vinyl is more practical for me.

I say get a winch if you want, but agree that you should at least learn how to use it.

Now, I have a response, I’m sure will be unpopular with a lot of you, but you don’t need the TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro to go off-roading. I’ve had several Jeep CJs, a Grand Cherokee and I’m on my second 4Runner (and that doesn’t include the 4x4 trucks I’ve owned), and with the SR5, I’ve gone nearly every place I’ve followed or led people with the TRD packages. Having KDSS is for people who need the aids. There’s nothing wrong with that, but some of us have been off roading long before any of these electronic nannies ever came out. As for rear lockers, the SR5 has A-TRAC in low range that’ll do just about everything you’ll ever need it to do. Granted, you’re going to need experience and proper tires, and possibly a lift kit, but unless you are doing serious rock crawling, requiring specialized equipment (and I’m talking competitions or rock faces) a properly equipped SR5 will go just about anywhere.

That being said, there’s nothing wrong with buying the TRD packages if that’s what you want. I’m an older person who prefers to do without the electronic gadgets as much as possible and would rather spend the extra money modifying my rig to my personal needs and desires.

I am from Russia. Learned to drive off-road on UAZ and Lada Niva and army Ural. I will take all the aids and nannies and heated seats and front camera for spotting and KDSS for non wallowy ride on mountain roads they can give.

Pedal Commander

Just installed the Pedal Commander on my 2014 sr5! Its like driving a completely different vehicle. It no longer has the lag off the line. I don't think that I will use it in sport or sport + modes as it was almost too fast for my comfort. Mainly bought it for the eco mode and city modes.

The good news is that you're honest and you will be like the majority here these days. The other good news is that you may even someday somehow end up using it, maybe.

A winch may not be needed but it adds a lot more usefulness compared to what it takes away. Buy it, use it a minimum of once and feel good about your purchase. Take a look at the hidden winch options if you don’t want a steel bumper.

Have you heard the term "Brolander" (an updated version of brodozer)? It's like overlander, but for bros. In other words, all of the most expensive gear (roof top tent, maxtrax, CBI bumpers all around, Warn or ComeUp winch, Fox shocks, etc... And most importantly, heavily ArmorAlled tires and not a scratch on the thing, and none of the equipment looks as if it has ever been used.

But I would tend to disagree that a winch adds more than it takes away, at least for someone who already admits they'll likely never use it. It and the bumper necessary to hold it will add the equivalent of another person you drive around all the time, and they aren't the most aerodynamic things in the world either. All that subtracts from their MPG. The bumpers/winches also add enough weight to the front that it usually requires new stiffer springs (unless you like the stinkbug look).

Not to mention the $1500-2000+ you'd be spending. Just for the look.
