Is it safe to drive with clicking CV joint?

Need some advice here.

2004 4wd sr5. The CV boots had been torn and the joints have been clicking since I got it 2 years and maybe 10k miles ago, although only at tight turns. A few weeks ago an audible rumbling sound started to appear at low speed acceleration and turning, probably due to the CV joints.

I should have it replaced but last few weeks had been crazy and next weekend I need to do a 800 miles trip. Really don't want to squeeze in the garage time next week.

How bad could this be? Is it possible the CV joints just break apart? What if I only drive on 2wd for now? I looked up the CV joint structure and it looks pretty tough...Can't find anyone saying they actually broke it, unless they are off roading or had lift on the truck. Mine is stock height.

BTW how long does it typically take a garage to get the CV axles replaced?

Time to do your cv joints. Way past time. If you were staying local you might be able to push it a little longer but with a road trip, do them preemptively.

Last thing you want is a axle coming apart on the road.

I say roll the dice. What's the worst that could happen? You get stranded in 500 miles from home and ruin your trip because you couldn't find a few extra hours of time. If time is your main issue, dealerships offer free loaner cars. Just drop the Runner off and go!

Went to a garage. The mechanic drove it for a few minutes and said it doesn't sound like the cv joint but more like exhaust shield. They could do the cv too if I want.

Maybe I'll go back Monday.

Can I deal with exhaust shield myself? How?
