Is it the time to upgrade_take 2?

OK I sent this same note to the 3rd gen guys and I got about 50/50 to sell or to keep. So here it is for you 4th gen folks.

Thinking of selling my 1999 Sport 4Runner 4X4 with 130k on it. The book is $7k and I have a guy that will give me 8K. I am having to drive more now that my mother lost her license. 300 miles every thursday. The miles and wear and tear are racking up and the price on Kelly BB is going down. I have had it for 8 yrs beautiful years.
I want to upgrade to 2006 Sport Edition 4X4 and want to pay around $16k.
My dilemma is sell now and pay 1/2 for a newer or use mine for a few more years and who knows what it will drop too with all the extra miles?
The price of used vehicles is up almost 30% now and they say its going to get worst. I think now is the time.
I would love to have a automatic for a change and the 4.0 liter, 245 hp. I need new tires now and cvc boots need replacing. The buyer knows that. So I don’t want to spend $1000 if I am going to sell.
I got a dilemma I tell ya.

I don't know if I agree with used prices up a bunch and still climbing. . . . . just bought a 4th gen and was looking for awhile to find just what I wanted. Could have bought sooner but had a hard time deciding if I should keep driving my truck or get the Toy. In your situation I think you are actually money ahead selling the '99 now.

With 130,000 miles you will probably start running into bigger cost repairs, even on a toyota. If you can swing an update, car loan rates are still pretty good. I don't think you can figure this on just cost as there are way to many varriables. One way to look at it is what will be the value and cost in 1 yr or 2 years if you don't move up now. some people like to run their vehicle as far as they can, I have always liked to move up when I have the money available or see that the upcomming repair costs are not going to be recoverable unless I drive the vehicle another couple years.

That sounds like a great deal on the '06 sport unless its got like a whole pile of miles. Also great to get more than book value for your current. Do it! Gas mileage I believe is similar in each. The SE's are effing sweet too, you will love it.

I can get this 06 SE for $15k... he was asking $16500 and the book is $18+ its got 51k on it but its not a 4x4. I has a dent on the drivers side pillar from a piece of tire rubber flying up on the freeway he says. I don't think that panel would cost that much to get fixed. I'm going to check w/the dealer tomorrow.

I'd sell the 99' and get the 06' IMO. Put down $2500 and keep the rest for mods. That will yield you a great interest rate with a low payment based on your credit.

I’m buying private party so it 8K from my buyer and 7k from me, cash man, no loan... craigslist, the guys getting married looking for dough but it seems like he doesn't even care... hes in love I guess. The book on it is $18,565, his ad $1600 he acounted for the little dent (not sure cost on that, smallest panel on the truck) ... would he go for $15 yes! Its got the blackish seats so thats cool...hate that light gray stuff. Looks like some stains, but should clean up. Is that material pretty durable.. use to leather? I’ll just scotch-guard the hell out it! 80% rubber on the BFG’s.

thats what I was thinking thanks for the advise, value and cost in 1 yr or 2 years. I don‘t know about the cost of repairs... I had a ‘89 I bought new drove for 15 years and never even needed to change the water pump, just the timing chain and a starter, of course much more primitive unit... it was actually like driving a covered wagon compared to the 3rd gen. Sold it to the guy who owns Rusty surfboards who live in New Zealand. He wanted a 4R to drive when he came to San Diego 4 times a year.. He use to have a ‘88 and love it.

Don't do it.

3rd Gens are considered by many the best 4R. Why not keep your 4R and buy a used honda or something for commuting? If you can't swing two cars, go for it......don't settle for a damaged one though.

Its 7 years of new tchnology and less miles. You are getting a FANTASTIC deal on price. I would really check maint and have a mechanic check it, just to be sure. Then you purchase it.

Two ways to think about it.

1- drive that 3rd gen into the ground. That's why we bought yota's. 130,xxx is not a baby, but if you think about it going to 250,000 thats another 5-10 years. The cost of keeping a car is (most of the time) cheaper.

2- write it off as a "want". I want a newer model and I've got a buyer for the older one.

If you look at it the other way around... Would you rather have a 4th gen or a 3rd gen with the differnce in your pocket?

That's ridiculous to say people in this country are broke because of auto loans.
If you can pay for the truck with cash, great!! I am just stating that, if you were financing, you could save part of that cash for mods. If you don't want to do mods, no big deal, put more cash down. But at that point it really only lowers your payment $20-50 really. The interest on a loan this small, isn't a big deal either, if you didn't have "CASH" to out right pay for it.
If banks didn't give out loans, and charge interest (to make money), the economy would be even worse. Paying a interest to a bank isn't "bad."

Your right in his economy it would make more sense to keep my cash and see what happens. I wont have any problem selling this truck a few years from now. The guy that wants it, approached me at a coffee shop... I didn't even advertise. I even had a hell angel give me a thumbs up.

heres the carfax... looks like was in a accident when it was new!

After finding out about the accident I started asking questions like where did you buy it:
“bought it from a dealer in Westminster I think”
“Was it Certified Preowned from a Toyota dealership?”
“If not did you have it checked out by Toyota before you bought?”
and I got this response:
Hey James....turns out I've decided to keep the truck. Sorry for the inconvenience and best of luck in you search!
