Is my keyless entry remote original or aftermarket?

Hi guys,

When I bought my 2001 it came with 3 keys, an original Toyota key, the spare, and some aftermarket one. It also came with 2 transmitters but I don't think they are original, can anyone confirm this? Does this mean I have some aftermarket alarm system? I don't like these transmitters and want to get OEM ones. If I get OEMs will I still be able to program them? Inside I have a Toyota alarm system fixture, I'm not sure if that means anything though.

Looks nothing like my 2000. There are pictures in the owner's manual if you have one.

Edit - here's my Y2K - I assume it's OEM but who knows.

Hmm yup that's what I've seen before. I wonder if I can program in one like that, or if I have an aftermarket system.

Where can I find the non oem alarm equipment, is it under the dash? Ill just replace it with the oem system.

Likely, but it all depends on how it was installed. Pull off that lower dash panel and start start investigating... If it was a good install, there will be some hard to figure out stuff. I recently removed an alarm from our van... they had even run wires up into the door!

Anything that is just tapped can be removed. Anything that is cut and wired through the remote will need to be reconnected.

The OEM remote receiver is actually in the hatch, and *should* work if you get the right remotes and programming procedure.

Ok so I called the dealer and confirmed that I did originally have the keyless entry. I also checked that I do have the buzzer in the engine bay. So I dont see why the previous owner would install something aftermarket. Is it possible to disable the OEM system that is build into the ECU. If it is not I will just program an OEM transmitter and be done with it until I can remove the aftermarket system completely.

All '99+ 4Runners have remotes (keyless entry), though the 'security' light stuff is optional.

The aftermarket system you have on there is cheaper than a new OEM remote, so that's why somebody would install it.

It's also possible that they had remote start installed with the Avital system. You might want to see what the * key does.

Nope, it just locks and unlocks the car, that’s it.

There was no factory security box under my seat. I will check the rear hatch now, but the dealer confirmed that it was installed.

How can I ditch this aftermarket system and go back to OEM?

Most of the splicing will be done behind the dashboard. I will follow the wire loom and see where those wires go. Directed Electronics also has some installation manuals online. If you can get the installation manual, you can decode exactly what each wire is for.

Also, your OEM alarm light has a glass breakage sensor built in. You can also follow on the OEM alarm light to see what it is connected to. It will allow you to find the OEM alarm module if it still exists. That is if they didn't splice the Avital alarm into the OEM alarm light.

That harness in no way looks factory. Toyota doesn't use shitty (knock-off) Molex connectors like that.

You'll have to pull off the lower dash panel to see how it was cut/spliced into the stock wiring.

I'll say it again: all '99+ 4Runners have keyless entry. The 'security' system on the '99+ trucks uses the same remotes, and it should be a few extra things plugged in under the dash (uses the same remote fobs). The '96-'98 security system / keyless entry is the one that is (usually) installed under the seat and it installs more like a standard (aftermarket) security system.

The OEM remotes in those year usually die and the alarm is not as effective hence why the previous owner installed the avital. I would not worry about it. It looks to be a good aftermarket install. Just use the keyless entry part. You can also google some channels on the remote to see if they connected the rear window to the alarm too.

Yup, I pulled off the lower dash and found all the spliced connections. I also checked in the rear hatch and found the receiver box.

I ordered an OEM key fob and will disconnect this aftermarket system to try and program it. If it works out I will completely remove all the splices and just switch over to the OEM system.

Interesting, I have a 2001 4Runner. I checked underneath the seat and have no such system installed. I checked in the rear hatch and found the receiver box there.

I personally just like to keep as much as I can original on the truck, that's the only reason I want to go back to the OEM system.
