Is something missing on this T4R?

I've been searching up and down for my first T4R and I came across this one in Florida. I called about it to make sure it's still available and to see about a cash price and the lady that answered and gave me the price and vin#. After checking out the carfax and liking the results I took another look at the pictures, which if you click on will zoom. In the last picture you can see the drivers area and correct me if i'm wrong but isn't this one missing a button on the shifter and on the dash to the left of the steering column?

Is it a four cylinder?

My Sister has a 2001 V6 4x4 4Runner that has the multi-mode 4wd that does have a button on the transfer case shifter, and a button to lock the center differential next to the dash light dimmer switch.

I've never seen a four cylinder 3rd gen in person. But my guess is that is one, and that they had just a basic manual shifting part-time 4wd system.

I don't think they made a 4 cylinder in 2001, but they might have not had a electronic rear diff lock button or a 4wd high button on the shifter. I thought they did which is why I thought it looked funny.
Not to mention the drivers floor mat looks like it says "MDX" as in Acura lol
 
Since its a 2001 sr5, its missing some of the things a 2000 and older 4runner would have which would be an electronic rear locking differential (next to the Steering wheel and light adjustment knob), and limiteds have selectable awd on the 4wd shifter. I think that is all, I'm pretty sure that some 2001+ came with a center differentail lock instead of the rear locker also. Again I'm not 100% sure about this info.
Looks like a clean 4runner with low miles though, get it!

I know they did discontinue the four cylinder at some point in 3rd gens, I just couldn't remember which year. I think you're right that it wasn't available in 2001.

From that pic it sure looks like a manually shifted part-time T-case to me.

What does the seller have to say about the 4wd system?

I ride a 2001, and my center differential lock is to the left of the steering wheel there, and the button not on the 4WD shifter would be my 4WD HI button. I think it's a 2000, but not sure how except for the six-spoke rims.
 
I am going to have to agree and say it is a 2000. I would run the vin and it should so the year. Another give away that it is not a 01-02 is in between the tach and speeedometer there would be a square that shows 4 wheels and a center circle. Never the less it is a really nice 4runner and if the price is good I would pick it up. Good luck
 
Anyone else see that its idling at 1500rpms?

Its definitely not a 2001. Its a 2000. The wheels are a giveaway too. They didn't offer those in 01-02.

I definitely didn't notice the idle speed, which such low mileage how much of a concern is that? whats the idle norm?
 
It's a 2000.

You can tell because of the side view mirror design. That mirror along with the cloudy tail lights and grille only came on the 2000, while the 1999 had the square side view mirrors like the 96-98. 2001-2002 also has a 3 knob climate control, while the 1999-2000 has 2 knobs and 2 sliders. 1996-1998 have 4 sliders.

The idle speed is high because the truck was cold, as you can see in the photo, the temp gauge is all the way down.

Not a 2.7, 4 cyl's came with black mirrors and door handles, and there weren't any 4 cyl SR5's in America at least.

Looks pretty rusty... that rear bumper is a good example.

Nice! thanks for the details on the year and idle. I thought that was rust on the bumper but couldn't really tell if it was just a weird reflection. with such low mileage i'm curious why they are letting it go for such a low price. Either they don't know what exactly they have on their hands, or they aren't telling the whole story. Being that I would have to travel to see the vehicle i'm trying to cover all my bases.
 
That is by far the rustiest 4Runner bumper I've ever seen (the chrome ones are the worst, but this one is baaaad).

My guess is the truck was in a rear-ender some time back and the bumper was replaced with a crap aftermarket bumper. If everything else looks good back in that area then nothing to worry about except replacing that junk bumper.

They are asking $8,900. I just called them out on the year and they admitted they made a mistake. I also asked about the rust and asked about any more rust or defects and the guy is having to "look it over". I may consider offering them $7k, but Im a little hesitant since I'd have to travel to see it and bring it back

Get pics of the undercarriage before you bother travelling to see it. It could be a rust bucket.
 
Hmmm,
My Wife's '97 has a rusty back bumper too ( Were in Florida too ) and the truck has always been titled here.
When we bought it, we went through it pretty well, no accidents, etc... only rust through on rear bumper.
Probably from going on the beach & not rinsing it off / underneath afterwards.

I'm not too keen on the aftermarket "limited" wood grain, but looks pretty good otherwise.

Offer them $6,500...
