Is the 285 really worth the hit in mpgs, opposed to the 275?

I have 285 duratracks now(plus lift). I love it, looks, offroad BUT most of my drives are on road so IF I do this again it'l probaby be 275.
But hey man YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE so try it out and if you Really hate it swap or sell for 275's otherwise go and be happy my brother from anotha motha!:fro:

I'm stock right now but when I lift my truck in a few months I'm going 275/70/17 because
1. They look big
2. Better mpg than 285
3. 285 take away more acceleration and slow you down more than the 275s

Although my mind is made up with size, I'm stuck in the BFG AT KO vs Duratracs debate lol

guess that makes my decision a whole lot easier :trophy: I was leaning toward the BFGs anyway because most people said they performed better in the snow and off road compared to Duratracs. However BFGs lacked in wet road conditions but I easily over look that because of the full time 4x4.

So I guess where I'm at is tough. The Nitto Trails are my favorite but are 285. The Duratracs and SSTs I like, but they're not the trails haha. They are both 275s. I just need help deciding considering I care about looks AND gas mileage.

This is a bit off topic but I have to ask.
No one has mentioned Firestone Destination tires. Is there some reason people dont use them? Tirerack actualy rates them the best by their survey. There is one tire that is rated better but it has a lot fewer responses so I down rated it (Khumo I think).

FYI, I had Duratrak on my Frontier- 285 and I did lose about 1-2 miles per gallon. But they sure looked good and performed well. They are an agressive tread design that seem to run fuller than some others. They rubbed on my Frontier where the same size Procomp AT did not rub.

Get the 285's, they look alot better IMO, and will give you a more beefy feel wile driving IMO because they are wider especially if your going with an A/T tread, 275 wont be much different, yet i wouldnt say a "Hit" in MPG increasing your width not even half an inch in most cases. It really wont affect you that much, I saw little to no difference in gas milage between my car previously on 33's for years and 35's now calculated by gps. After all you do own an SUV so... your not going to get Prius milage:cheers:

Well Alex what is your gas mileage? I know you have a lot of "unrevealed" mods but what is it? I still want to be able to get 300 miles out of a tank. Thats my goal!! How do you like the SSTs anyway?

My dad runs the Destination AT's on his Tundra. He's on his 3rd set, absolutely loves them. They are an excellent tire for on road, and seem to handle off road pretty good as well. They're super smooth and quiet. At times I wish I would have gotten them over my Hankook's. I'd say off road performance is about the same (we don't do true off roading, only a ton of gravel/dirt and some mud during hunting season, so maybe not a great review). On road, the Destinations are much better than the Hankooks. A lot quieter and smoother riding, better in rain also. My dad doesn't believe in rotating tires, so his mileage isn't all that great (don't know exact).

I don't have experience with any of the other AT tires for comparison, but would definitely recommend them based on what I've seen for a more street oriented AT tire.

I don't know a lot of people running the Desintations, but my experience has been all positive. However, as I mentioned, the only thing to have to compare to is my current Hankook's. I'd definitely agree with the Tire Rack reviews.

Another popular option is the Revo 2, but they'll be more expensive.

Anyhow, 275 to 285 isn't that much, but every little bit adds up. I'd guess you'd be looking at .5-1mpg difference between them. With something mild like the Destination AT, the difference may not be quite so much.

Wow i've been doing this tire debete for weeks and will continue, I currently have 265/70/17 michilen a/s load range E, The best towing tire Ive ever had, but thet absoulty suck in the rain, My dad manages a goodyear store so you
can see where Im leaning, but I may go back to stock size, due to ****ty fuel mileage and ride, its my daily drive @ 26 miles one way everyday. Looking at
Hankook Dyna pro atm, GY dura trac and bfg ALL terrian, I dont go off road but a couple times a year but Love the look..... the search contuines....:gun5:

Desert Fox, just my $.02 but the FS Destination AT is an awesome tire. I had them on my 3rd gen runner and loved them. Loved them so much I might go with them again when I get new tires next year but I also wanted to try something different and the Nitto Terra Grapler seems to be a popular tire for the 4th gen runner.

Oh, and my buddy convinced me to get 285's. They all have them on their Taco's and they look bad ass. Now I just have to wait for my tax return to get here :hatsoff:
