Is the 285 really worth the hit in mpgs, opposed to the 275?

guess that makes my decision a whole lot easier :trophy: I was leaning toward the BFGs anyway because most people said they performed better in the snow and off road compared to Duratracs. However BFGs lacked in wet road conditions but I easily over look that because of the full time 4x4.

I have had both in 285/70/17 and guess what I sold the bfg's and got the duratracs and never looked back.
Key points on this
Duratrac's were cheaper, the road noise is exactly the same, the wet traction on the duratracs are far better. Snow well I can't say anything about that I live in Hawaii.
Downsides
285/70/17 put a hurting on my mpg, the duratracs are soft and the lava rocks are sharp out here

My mileage sucks but I can afford gas with no worries so it was worth the hit on mpg's for the look and capability of the 285 in my eyes

I just went 267 on my last tank. Sucks but it is what it is.

Filled up and got 289(310 with 285's)miles on the tank with my range saying I had another 47 to go.

Knightsfs4, how are you only getting a 300 mile tank before a lift/tires?

I have the 275/65/18 Duratracs and OME lift. I'm averaging 17 mpg with a 58 mile round trip in heavy traffic (2-3 hours which SUCKS). I was averaging high 19s with the stock setup, but traffic has gotten worse and my driving has been less "fuel conscious".

I stretch my tank a little and normally fill up around 19-20 gallons (out of 23) which is above the 300 mile range and normally not long after the low fuel light comes on. If I ran the tank dry (17*23) I could go 391 miles...theoretically. :nerd:

Idk how I only get 300. I think it's my driving habit since I drove like a grandma for a tank and went 315 with 35 left on the range. One tank I drove pretty conservatively and got 290. May be the plugs but idk. I do also have a all time 4wd v8 though. Does that still sound low?

This is kind of where I've been lately. The 14.5 was a week where everything was just going wrong and I had to get everywhere quick. The 17 was when I was driving like I grandma. Considering these numbers, what do you think I'd be looking at with 275s/285s.

One thing I'd suggest is using a GPS to verify mileage. I did this, come to find out my odometer is 6.6% off, speedometer is off as well but not that much (more like 3.x%). Calculating that 6.6% error, my gas mileage is approx 1mpg than it works out to be. Just something to think about, it's possible you're getting slightly better than you think.

I have 265/70-17 Cooper STT on mine right now, and 285/65-16 my Suburban, and have nothing but good things to say about them. I lost 2 maybe 3 mpg with these tires but I never worry about road conditions and they just don't seem to slice up when in the rocks out in Colorado. I have neglected these things for 50k miles and the tread is still at about 8mm of depth but the front two are cupped something horrible and I'm going to replace all four of them soon. I rotated them once and there are some wheel weights missing, I will more than likely go with these again but in a 285. I don't think the 285 is going to kill the mpg's that much compared to the 275's. It is a truck. I daily drive a 3/4 ton Suburban for now and gave up keeping a close eye on my mpg's, I just throw 40-50 in as needed, it is what it is. In the summer I ride the moto or pedal to work and my moto drinks the premium fairly well too, 25ish to the gallon in town but lots of smiles to the gallon. Get what you want to get and try not to over think it, give up some fast food to pay for your -2 mpg's.

Hello I am new to the forum and I don't understand, you guys keep saying the duratracs are less expensive but I cannot find them for under $280/tire. Less expensive than what? How are the Falken Wildpeak AT3w tires?

If you get off road be cautious of buying DuraTracs. I had 3 sidewall failures with them vs none with BFG's. On the pavement they're good though.

I have 285s and honestly there is little difference between the MPGs.

If you like the look of the 285s get them......

Ive had both sizes in the past, the 275s felt pointless. Gas mileage dropped about the same as 285s. If it was different it was less than 1 mpg different and honestly thats meaningless to me. 275s didnt look as good as 285s.
