Is there a difference in vehicle longevity between the 5 sp. manual and auto trans.?

I have a 96 SR5 5VZ V6 engine with the 5 speed manual and have 244k miles on it so far. Today my trucks twin pulled up next to me at a light. The guy said his had 350k miles on it and before I got to ask him if it was an automatic, he pulled off. Does the transmission type have anything to do with how long the engine lasts? Could I really hope to see those kind of miles on mine? I use Redline fluids in the diffs and transfer case and full synthetic in the motor. What kind of high mileage do you guys have? i have a 2000 auto trans with 225k and showing no signs of stopping. these machines are built to last forever if you maintain them, that is why i have one. i am planning on having this car forever.

I believe the manual will out live the automatic but will need to have the clutch replaced before an automatic would wear out (depending on driving style and type) The biggest threat to Toyota truck automatics is radiator/automatic transmission cooler failure. I have 223k on my 98 with the original clutch replaced within 1000 miles ago that didn't really need to be replaced yet and 220k on my wife's 05 auto with no problems.

01-02 can have auto transmission problems.
96-00 auto trans are reliable if maintained properly meaning dont overheat and avoid pink milkshake, and regular flushes.

Manual trans may last longer than the auto if maintained but susceptible to abuse from someone who doesn't know how to shift, using gl5 tranny fluid instead of gl4, that contains sulphur which dissolves the brass synchros and causes bad shifting. Also you will for sure at some point need a new clutch.

Overall about the same I'd say.

No, the transmission does not effect how long your engine lasts. It does not affect your potential sludge issues, head gasket woes, timing belt fails, bad plugs, wires and injectors. It does not affect compression or lack thereof.

I have an automatic with 260K miles. I'm on my original transmission and 2nd engine.

Based on the anecdotal evidence at this forum, either the auto or 5-speed can last into the 300K mile range. The operative word here is can, as opposed to 'will or 'is guaranteed to'.
As a buyer of used approx. 100K mile-old vehicles, I'd rather have a manual because the manual is likely to indicate in advance(through noises) when something is failing.

I think it’s all the same. Depending on your driving. Mine used to be auto. Had about 190-200k when I removed the original auto transmission and swapped a manual one. The manual had I think 260-280k miles on it. Had to replaced it couple years laters. Now have 2nd manual transmission with 100k+ miles on it. That’s what the junkyard said. But we all know that! Anyways, I have a wine/howl at high speeds. I don’t know if it’s the transmission or the front bearings. Aiming toward the transmission. But I don’t really care at this point. If something breaks. I’ll know what the issue was. Sometimes it’s so frustrating and annoying to diagnose a sound. So yeah, shit happens lol. Good thing is they are cheap, and easy to replace.

Thanks for the replies! Today I stopped by another twin of my T4R. Same year, same color and the guy said it was an automatic with the same mileage as mine. His paint still looked nice, where mine has lost the clear coat and looks a little rough, but mine runs great! :lookout:
