Is there a reasonable ECU programmer for the 4Runner?

Also, the IS350 is a turbo engine. All turbo engines come from the factory with a conservative tune, something akin to 10.0 AFR (with the turbo car I owned), for longevity and safety. You see huge gains when you lean that out to 11.3!

The IS350 is not a turbo engine. It is a normally aspirated GR series v6. Nearly identical to the one in the 3rd gen Tacoma. The IS200t is the turbo version - but it's significantly less powerful and as far as I'm aware still untunable. It's far more complex in fuel delivery, valve timing, and turbo operation, than any other turbo engine in any vehicle I'm aware of. I think tuning may happen eventually, but building a tune that incorporates all of the available options is going to take more resources than probably any tuner shop has. The best I think we'll see for that engine will be a half effort where the tuner just eliminates the use of atkinson cycle operation and eliminates the use of the wide band portion of the valve timing. Basically just takes it back to what they're used to seeing and adding boost. The result is likely to drop power at low rpms, lose mpg, but gain power at the high rpm range. Not really what I'd want.

I also think the 2.0L turbo engine will be the most likely base engine in the next generation of 4runner. And it'll be woefully underpowered.

Whoooops, you're right! Flaky memory, I guess. :noidea:

The only reason I know is because I had one. They're actually really great cars. The awd system is really fantastic. I wish Toyota would use it in its SUVs. I would buy another one in a heart beat if we were looking for a sedan. It met an untimely end at the hands of Larry H. Miller Lexus in SLC, UT. Was in for a minor repair (dash LED) and they parked it outside of the fence where either an employee or his/her friend came and stripped it. No one other than a mechanic would know to steal all the matching wood grain parts, or take it apart like this... And it isn't the only one that's had this happen to it at the same dealer. They did a VERY poor job of trying to fix it - tried to pass off used parts, tried to get away with not tinting the window that was replaced, couldn't fix rattles or electrical gremlins after literally months of driving a loaner es350 then low balled an offer to buy us out of it by about $5k because it was damaged - long story short don't walk RUN away from Larry miller dealerships; we're not friends anymore.

:wow2:

I have wanted one of those cars for a very very very long time. It might be able to make me look good, but I just love the Lexus variant of the 2GR-FE.

I literally got sad when I saw those pictures.

I would say they are changing the timing parameters is all. Again, your 4Runner will do that automatically (and you will see the gains) if you start running 93 through it. It will just take a few thousand miles. Quit running 93 and it goes back.

I say he hasn't done it because he is still working. Whoever finally cracks the Toyota ECU will instantly become wealthy and won't have to work again ever. Nobody has yet.

TTFS and RR racing have software that can tune the ISF and they're working on other vehicles too. If I recall correctly it was alien tech out of Italy that actually cracked it. There are tuners in Japan who have access to Toyotas software too for their race cars. TTFS was busy with their core customers (bmw) so they weren't spending much time on it. I don't know the complete details so if it's fully cracked or just allows some changes I can't say for sure. I know they were saying they couldn't do transmission changes initially.

That is beyond ****ed up. Sorry to hear you had to deal with that. Beautiful car.

So Dustin at DAP tuning can tune the 5th gen. I am slowly organizing a group of mostly Tundra guys for a tuning day at a friends Dyno shop. Dustin would be flying in.

I will be having my tundra and T4R tuned to reduce the Torque management and drivability. I am not that interested in additional power there will be negligible gains. I just want to be able to use the power I already have without the computer pulling timing and altering the transmission. And to get rid of this awful throttle lag

If anyone in the Northeast is interested, send DAP or me a message. https://daptuning.com/

Your story might be true but we have been hearing this exact same story with the names changed for 15 years. And it's always "a friend" or "I heard" or "I read" and never an actual customer that has an honest full cracked ECU tune. There are a few piggyback controllers. A few emulators. A few that change simple timing or fuel adjustments.
Again, your story is as good as any but if someone truly has cracked the Toyota ECU don't you think they would have 500 products available for sale to take advantage of it? If you Crack one Toyota ECU then you have cracked them all.

No, I totally hear you. That's why I mentioned I don't know the details, but I know they can change the fuel mappings as well as rev limiters. It appears they're very limited as to what they can do as the transmission was still locking out at the regular rev limiter for those that received the higher 7200rpm tune at first. Initially everyone had to send in their ECU to RR Racing to have them tuned, but they since have released a hand held device which can upload the tunes to the ECU. It's definitely not a piggy back, but again it could just be deciphering a few parameters and being able to change them.

I know nothing in terms of tuning so I can't even begin to understand what they may be doing, but I just know it caused quite the stir in the IS F community. As you mentioned, if it was a full cracking of the ECU, they would be rolling in the dough.

Read my above post. Dustin has be successfully "cracking" late model programming for some time now.

Read my above post.

I did. Do you think he cracked a Toyota ECU? You realize whoever does that first will be a zillionaire right? I think many are changing basic parameters that could be changed with Tech stream. I don't think anyone has anything to offer for a Toyota like they do for a Jeep, Chevy or Ford.

Look, I know this gig. I've had a supercharged tundra since 08 and have seen a bunch of people come on the forums claiming this and that only to disappear with no follow up. We gave Dustin the same shit we gave the others. We will believe it when we see it....

He's able to remove the torque management, adjust timing, and properly tune

He is an extremely nice guy and will answer any questions you have. If people have interest, they should talk to him. My word doesn't mean shit here....

Would love to ask some questions specifically. Hey, he might have done it and is just not a capitalist who knows. Good luck and if you find specific answers report back!
