Is there any point to a Cornfed lift without larger tires?

I was on a trail the other day and the ground clearance on my runner wasn't enough to make quite a few area's or at least I didn't feel comfortable making them without having at least a couple more inches. But at the same time I'm not looking forward to doing new wheels and tires. So is it advantageous to do a cornfed lift without aftermarket tires and such?
I did a search and didn't find anything answering this specific question. Anyone have input here?

A lift will get you places where you were unable to go. Even using the stock shoes, you'll be fine. Over time, you'll learn that getting better shoes will improve your offroading capabilities greatly.

Many owners like to get the lift and shoes at the sametime as with the lift because your shoes look mighty small as it does not fill the wheelwell completely. It's an asthetic reason but two folds as it'll improve offroading capabilities (depends on tire of course).

Hope that helps. Just remember that doing the lift/wheel combo takes a big chunk of change out of the rear pocket so ya gotta plan for this expensive mod. There are people that do this in phases too as it's too costly so whatever floats your boat.

Good luck!

I could easily afford to do the wheel/tire and lift combo but I never like to separate from my money that much at one time... so if I could skate by with just lift for now I'd be happiest. My only other issue is I dont have the facilities to do a lift install myself... I dont even know of anyone around here who could do the install. anyone from so cal have input here?

There's LOTS (and I mean LOTS) of members here just in the 323/626/310/562/714/949/818/951/909..... that has done the lift on the xreas setup.

If you need help, just buy the kit and post up a "wrenchaton" request. People will drop by to give you a hand, provided that you provide all the tools (power and air a must) necessary along with any munchies! I've personally done a few (probably too many) but I know others are willing to help. Just ask and they will flock.

Good luck!

A lift of 2" will not make you rig look strange with the stock wheel/tire combo (ask me how I know) and will definitely give you some improved offroad capability.

A lift of 3" will be a little more noticeable with stock wheel/tire combo but don't let that stop you from getting the lift. It won't look stupid. People obsess about having huge wheels and tires that stick out from their trucks with a gigantic lift but a 3" lift will not look that way. It will be practical and completely functional.

As Lance said, better tires will improve the off-road capability also.
You can do this anytime after the lift.

Cheers
Mark

Even with a 2 or 3" lift you can't get much of a bigger tire on there anyway right?
At least not without rubbing issues. So you really can't fill the wheel wells.

Hey Lance, I read on another post someone had their CV boots leaking because of a spacer lift, is this any problem on the 4th gens?

Shouldn't experience any issues. When you do the lift, you might want to double check that the boots are on firmly (it's just a clamp on the rubber housing so sometimes that can get loose).

Other than that, you're ok on the 4th gens.

Ok another question for you... I searched on the topic and there were some mentions you can fit a 33" tire on there after the lift? I was looking at some BFG All terrtain T/A KO 285/70/17's would these fit after a lift? I'm pretty sure they would but my next question is would they change the MPG any? and would the stock gearing be fine for them or not?

Will fit, just rub at full lock and full compression. Just trim the affected areas and call it a day. Personally speaking 285's look soo much better than 265.70.17's anyday :)

mpg will get affected due to the larger tires (weighs a lot more..) but w/ the v8 you will be fine. Expect around solid 15mpg. Driver driving characteristics will vary mpg calculations though.

No aftermarket gears so you're stuck w/ the stock 3.73's. No word on when they'll have aftermarket gears.

Good luck

Do you ever tow? The 285/70/17's would change your effective drive ratio to about a 3.48, which is horrible for towing.

I tow stuff on an irregular basis but yes I do... ok so I guess that means do the lift but not quite so big tires can go on. thanks for the info both of you.

Towed w/ 285/75/16 for approximately 650 miles. (flatbed hauling a honda accord).

Didn't have any problems w/ the drive ratio since I drove like an old fat lady ;) With the v8, I didn't have any problems. Yup it was a bit slower but I didn't really care as I was in no rush to drive fast and crash.

If it's one of those rare situations, I'd say don't worry too much about it. The v8's torque will suffice in this situation. If not, you can always swap out to your stock when you tow :)
