I mean......at least it would have reached 88mph....
All joking aside, only real performance mods available are intake and exhaust. TRD has scrapped their supercharger program and has been unwilling to release any of the ECU codes making it difficult to get a viable aftermarket option.
Speed costs money son. How fast do you want to go?
If you have some deep pockets take it to a pro and have a custom turbo put on it. It will cost a bundle but you will have more than enough power gain to satisfy yourself.
My girlfriend has a 2015 Ford Edge Sport with the twin turbo 2.7L EcoBoost @ 315 HP/350 ft lbs torque.
Trust me. That little crossover flat shits and gets with it. I have driven many V-8's that seem lame compared to it.
Why am I talking about the Edge? Because if Ford can squeeze 315 HP out of a tiny 2.7L motor even a mild amount of boost on the 4.0 Toyota will put it well over 300 HP with no internal mods.
But... You are going to have to drop some dime and time to do it. ;-)
I know a few things about turbos.....

That's my track and fun day car. Thanks "son"...
codes? I think you mean ECU tune and dyno results. There really isnt a whole lot of coding involved just changing specific values in AFR, timing, yada yada yada
What kind of HP gains did you see and at what cost?? Money and low end torque wise?
is that the factory TT or you boost it after?
I love them too. "These trucks are as slow as molasses flowing UP hill in the middle of Vermont in winter! But since there is no aftermarket for them, let's bash folks asking the community if there is anything we can do to get some more ponies out of it"........I love these threads.
"Man I had a LS, turbo, tuned, cammed, y piped, catbacked, supercharged, hemi, ****in racecar that I dropped a million dollars into and that shit was so fast mang."
The biggest single thing I personally want - 4.10:1 gearing option. That would be ideal for me and I think for most of us with stock to 285 tire sizes. IMO 4.56 is too low for overall performance on the highway, but 4.10 would be ideal and 4.30 would be a nice option as well.
There are superchargers for this engine BTW. You can google Prado 150 supercharger and find them. They only offer about 50-75hp boost, and IMO it's not worth it for $10k. Just buy a GX.
Where I think you might find some swap potential is through buying a complete wrecked GX460 and swapping the full drivetrain. My guess is that it'd be damn near a bolt in swap and the ECU would be plug and play. But again, might not be worth the effort for small gains. A 4.6L turbo v8 could be a very interesting build, but probably pretty $$.
Never did any real Dyno testing just seat of the pants. The mileage went up and the power was noticeable. I did not loose any low end. It just felt and sounded much better. Can't remember the cost back then.

You need to realize this exact question comes up every week or so and the answer is always the same. There's only so many ways to say nothing realistic can be done. Sure there are pie in the sky solutions but you might as well have just bought something fast to begin with as the cost would be astronomical to make a fast 4runner by swapping engines, not to mention it would then have the reliability of a Jeep if you were lucky.
Since you obviously race (it seems every one of you with this question does and they post pics to prove it) you would know the simplest and cheapest solution to making a 4Runner fast is to strip out around 600 lbs of interior and put on smaller diameter tires with lighter wheels. Of course this defeats the purpose of having a SUV but trying to do the engine and drivetrain mods defeats the purpose of having a Toyota. .. reliability and durability.
find a wrecked LX or LC, drop in that 5.7
EASY AS PIE
Sort of...
The 3UR-FE will fit, but then you'll want to swap the transmission and the transfercase in as well; otherwise you really have to mess with the ECM/Modules as they control both and are programmed for both. Then there's the question of how well the drivetrain will hold up to the extra torque that the 3UR-FE drivetrain has (and to be honest if you have a donor LX chassis you may as well go with the beefier axles anyways.) Finally you need to consider all the CAN communication and modules because you cannot just "hack" the ECM and tweak it like most brands, so you need to plan it out correctly so the vehicle actually operates correctly.
Theoretically you'd only need the ECM, 4WD Computer, and possibly the combination meter itself. Though there is a possibility that the Skid Control ECU will not play well with the 3UR-FE as well as other ancillary systems.
It's not super easy, but it is doable and I've been thinking of how to fit a Supercharged 3UR-FE drivetrain in my 4th gen.![]()

You can get 4.10s. They're Toyota OEM, I think they were actually standard on the 4 cylinder 5th gens when they first came out. (Did anyone actually buy one of those things...?)
In my research I read a ton of threads on 4.10 vs 4.56 swaps mostly on FJ and Tacoma Forums and the general consensus seems to be that it is not a big enough jump/improvement to warrant the cost.
