Is there anything we can do to bumb the performance on the 4.0?

Why am I talking about the Edge? Because if Ford can squeeze 315 HP out of a tiny 2.7L motor even a mild amount of boost on the 4.0 Toyota will put it well over 300 HP with no internal mods.

Yeah but doing forced induction on an engine that originally wasn't designed for it opens up a whole new can of worms.

If you dig on this site long enough, you can find that there was someone that Dyno'ed their rig stock and then added the Cold Air intake and Dyno'ed again which showed real gains. The best your going to get is CAI, TRD (or any other brand) dual exhausts and changing the gears. They do this because it has less things to fail while out on trails etc, i.e. a supercharger etc. I came from 5.7L Tundra and it took a while but I am now used to driving the T4R more you will adjust to it more and it will feel more responsive. :juggle: Good luck.

I know a few things about turbos.....

That's my track and fun day car. Thanks "son"...

Siiiiick, I love FD's.

You can get 4.10s. They're Toyota OEM, I think they were actually standard on the 4 cylinder 5th gens when they first came out. (Did anyone actually buy one of those things...?)

In my research I read a ton of threads on 4.10 vs 4.56 swaps mostly on FJ and Tacoma Forums and the general consensus seems to be that the 4.10 is not a big enough jump/improvement over 3.73 to warrant the cost.
I just keep reading Jeremy556s posts regarding gears and honestly have no good reason for not having them on my truck yet....Soon.

Easy tiger, I wasn't referring to you and I was only poking.
If you "love them too" then I take it you've read them before?

I've read many and I will echo the same thing that has already been said, the only real worthy investment is gears. Which are next on my list.

That said I honestly do feel your pain. I have often wondered how it is that the 3.5 liter vq35 in my Z car puts out close to 300 HP, and the 4.0 liter v6 in the runner is only 270. As mentioned I'm sure a nice Dyno tune would do wonders if someone could just hack the ECU.

Tell ya what...I am taking the 350 in for a tune a tuner shop in Houston Called Jtran when I get home. (not for another 6-8 weeks I'm afraid)
He is primarily a Nissan guy but they do other things too. I was thinking about asking him if there is anything he could do or try on the runner as far as tuning goes. Who knows? FRS's are huge now, and maybe there will be some avenue through software developed for Scion.
I will ask about it when I am in and see what they say.

There how's that?

That's better!.... :thumb:

I don't get why Toyota doesn't offer... ANYTHING for performance on these motors or really anything else. Even their "sports cars" (Lexus) are handicapped with little to no aftermarket as far as engine performance. I know that a detuned motor running under it's potential is going to be very reliable, but come on... 270 HP from a 4.0 at 20 something MPG?!?

The body on frame ancient technology is really what draws me to the 4Runner and the FJ as being real trucks. However, you get disk brakes... you get KDSS.... There are modern components on old style truck frames. WHy not a modern motor with some HP and real modern mileage? Just like the LC was under powered for YEARS with that giant heavy truck and just the inline 6.

I know what I was getting into when I got this truck. It's my 5th 4Runner. It's going to get the wife and kiddo around for years without so much as a hickup. I just wish I could add a tad of getup...

The 5th gen rear differential is not compatible with gears from other 8" or "8.4" toyota differentials. There are only 2 factory ratios that have ever been offered in what's called the "8.2". Those are 3.73 and 3.93. There are only two aftermarket options - 4.56 and 4.88. This leaves a large gap between 3.93 and 4.56. I do not know enough about these differentials to know if one could modify an 8.4 ring and pinion fit, or possibly even use an 8.4 pinion in the housing and a custom ring gear - although IIRC most are sets that are machined and polished as a pair so maybe not? I suspect it would be cheaper to build a hybrid axle with a LC 9.5 center than mess with custom 1 off gears. Or since the new Tacoma likely has the same abs sensors and an internal e-locker, if they end up with any model having a 4.10 gear ratio that might be the easiest swap, but you'd end up with drum brakes :(

Toyota offered a wide range of gears for the standard 8" differential. So many that there are both 4.10 and 4.11 ratios (41 tooth ring, 10 tooth pinion, and 37 tooth ring, 9 tooth pinion). Basically if you can imagine it, you can probably get it in an 8". The 8.2 is very limited so far.

Oh man, I just went and found a thread a read only a couple days ago because I just knew that it had a list of part numbers for available gears for the 8.2 and 4.10 was at the top of the list. and it did!
The part number is "NOAVAIL"
Sorry.
I'm an Idiot.

I can throw a pigskin a ****in 1/4 mile though!

Sort of...

The 3UR-FE will fit, but then you'll want to swap the transmission and the transfercase in as well; otherwise you really have to mess with the ECM/Modules as they control both and are programmed for both. Then there's the question of how well the drivetrain will hold up to the extra torque that the 3UR-FE drivetrain has (and to be honest if you have a donor LX chassis you may as well go with the beefier axles anyways.) Finally you need to consider all the CAN communication and modules because you cannot just "hack" the ECM and tweak it like most brands, so you need to plan it out correctly so the vehicle actually operates correctly.

Theoretically you'd only need the ECM, 4WD Computer, and possibly the combination meter itself. Though there is a possibility that the Skid Control ECU will not play well with the 3UR-FE as well as other ancillary systems.

It's not super easy, but it is doable and I've been thinking of how to fit a Supercharged 3UR-FE drivetrain in my 4th gen. :)

Guy on MUD put on the SC to his 200 and with the aftermarket headers he dyno'd 570

Yup, TRD rated it about 550ft.lbs of torque. Hence why I am so interested in swapping one into my 4th gen (since the J120 & J150 platforms are essentially the same dimensions, if it can be done in a 4th it can be done in a 5th; the main issue is the electronics/modules.)

It would almost be easier to just buy the GX or LX and drive that or try to retrofit the T4R body on it. :)

It won't fit the frames are too different and you'd have to cut up the body to do it; I'd say it's more effort to do that and to fit the drive train on the frame. I'll be honest, if they sold the LandCruiser in a larger variety of trims like they do overseas; I'd have probably bought one. I just didn't feel the need to spend $80k on a vehicle that I'd spend extra money and time to decontent $40k worth of crap I don't want/need.

The prado 150 chassis is shared between the gx460 , 4Runner and prado all share the same body mount location also the same 109" wheel base. I think the body would drop right on. I worked on a GX and installed a RB 4Runner body lift and it was identical.

Pretty sure those are 4.56 gears on the 4cylinder models. I remember some people here were considering buying them, before Nitro came out with the 4.56 and 4.88s. There are also Toyota 3.9s from the 2010+ FJC with 6 speed manual.

I don't really think any of that would be a viable option for me. The truck is wife driven and only 5 days old. I guess I'll just lug it around for a few years as is then see what the 6th gen has in store for us.

Less displacement, more gears and better fuel economy if I was a betting man...

That's true about the GX, I was referring more to trying to adapt the LX frame.

I'm sure it will be something super awesome since I just bought a brand new one.... :gossip: I hope not a smaller motor but something similar with more HP and more efficient. 6-7 speed auto would be fine as long at it remained as bullet proof as the current boxes. My hope is that since the rest of the world still love BOF trucks, that at least will remain in 20XX when the new Runner gets here.

OP, have you taken your 4runner offroad or on some bumpy forest service roads or offroad trails yet?

If not, I recommend you go seek some out. When you engage the 4wd hi and start crawling over the rough stuff and up steep terrain, you'll find that 4.0L is more than adequate. When you engage the 4Low, you'll have all the torque you'll need.

It's 5 days old....

If you read the OP real quick you'll notice I have a VERY similar vehicle in the stable already too. :)

No worries. With a low post count I assumed you may be new to the 4runner. I was surprised by a few things when I moved to a newer 4runner having an older one and generally being a land cruiser guy in the past. I still am holding out hope of a 4.10 set.

Well then why ask the question?

Why not get to know your vehicle's inherent capabilities?

The short answer: anything is possible with the right amount of money.

The long answer: there is no simple and relatively cheap way to add any significant amount of horsepower to the 5th gen 4runner. Toyota discontinued the TRD supercharger program (and the existing superchargers don't work with the 5th gen's engine) and the TRD CAI and exhaust add negligible power, if any at all.
