is there anyway to beef up the 3.4?

TB spacer? TB SPACER? Are you just being funny? Other than being an interesting christmas tree ornament, a TB spacer is best jammed up the inventor's azz.
More power w/o going FI typically means breathing better and being lighter. Other than the simple deckplate mod and the mod that replaces the restricitive intake tube (forget the mod name; it's been a few years since I had a 3rd gen), you'll need a few bucks to open up the intake, exhaust and some cam/head work. A good speed shop that knows how to retune a 3.4 would help the most, IMO. LT's would help too but at this point you're spending some chunks of money for some rather minor gains.
Other options (which also won't help a LOT) are weight loss (effectively changing your power-to-weight ratio), gears.

Definently the deckplate and ISR mods. You can do both for under $50. There are some really elaborate threads already in here on both mods, as well as Yotatech, check there as well. Gives about 5-6 more BHP allegedly (some have run dyno tests and say it does nothing) but it does increase throttle response and make ut sound awesome.

If I can give you one bit of advice, it would be this: learn to be content with going slow.
I know it's hard, maybe impossible when you're still 17. When I was 17 I was trying to make my Dodge Neon fast. I spent way too much money on it, and yeah, I had fun making it mine....but the car never was actually fast, and if I could have that $6-$7K back.....boy oh boy.
I admit, I do still have a dodge neon to play with, and it is fast. But I'm content going slow in my 4Runner, because I know without spending 4 digit money, I'm not going to make it THAT much faster or more powerful. Better to make it reliable, and keep up on the maintenance. Just my .02. :hatsoff:

I did read on the forum once that if you put a few ounces of unicorn urine in your gas tank you will see power increases upwards of 100-150 hp. And gas mileage will go up to something like 600/tank. Also all gasket leaks will be cured.

Whoa. Not a chance. Full exhaust (headers back), intake mods, and bigger injectors equals 40whp? Maybe 20. You say if you get it "tuned right". How are you tuning it? Anyway...there's no way exhaust and intake mods require larger injectors. Extra fuel doesn't make any extra power.

I dont know what everyone keeps complaining about. The car I had before my Runner was a 2000 lbs. 1989 CRX with B16a swap, that had high compression pistons, Better rate valve springs, lightweight flywheel, and intake/exhaust mods. Sure it wasn't a ten second car, but for the total money spent on mods, that puppy could scoot.
Now, switching to the Runner, Sure its not nearly as fast as my Honda was, but when I consider the size and weight of the truck, and the size of the engine; Im really not disappointed. When I stab the throttle it gets up and goes. And I never feel like Im not going to be able to pass someone on the highway.
Just my .02
(Really don't mean to offend anyone, looking back this post kinda looks like a rant. And I would love a supercharger just like the next guy)

Seriously, everyone who owns a 3rd gen 4runner should no the electric fan swap. It will shock you how much of a difference it makes. That belt driven fan takes so much power away from that motor I'm honestly suprised that Toyota didn't use an electric fan as standard. The whole swap can be done for less than $50 if you do it yourself. Call me crazy but I swear my 4runner was quicker through 1st gear (pre FI) than my SC400
