Is this 2001 SR5 4wd worth 5700?

I stumbled upon a 2001 SR5 4wd with 161k at a Toyota dealer. Driver seat areas have been beat up. Door armrest and steering wheel :driving: both have small wornouts. The driver floormat was missing. Carpet also has some worn patches. Dealer already told me valve gasket needs to be replaced. Other parts and paint look fairly ok for a 12 yrs vehicle. As a newbie, I am not quite sure if it's worth $5700 that I bugged them down to. I really appreciate any insights! And Happy New year!

Mileage, Pictures, Dents? Clean title?

161,500 miles. No dent, no rust. Few scratches here and there. Exterior is fairly good for 12 yrs old. Clean title.

My spouse and I paid 6700 for a 97 165000 miles not long ago. It's in mint condition. But 5700 sounds like a good deal

It's all about how patient you are. I paid $4200 for both of my last 3rd gen limiteds in GOOD condition. The most recent only had 110k on it and only needed tires. I also searched for 3 months before finding it.

If you aren't in a hurry, keep searching!

It depends on his area. Where I live you can't find one in good condition for under 6000.


Op have you seen a carfax on it?

My advice ....

Don't buy it without first:

1) putting it on a lift and checking the undercarriage for rust. Rust frame rot is a major problem for some 4Runners and Tacomas

3) do a compression test on all CYL and get a printout of the results. This will cost $50-$75 at any mechanic and it is worth the cost

4) Carfax, check for bad title and verify mileage. Keep in mind that Carfax will NOT tell you about all/most accidents. You need to have a mechanic or body shop check for accident repair.

I replied to your thread on the other forum as well. It seems the general consensus here is the same. Check what things cost/values in your area. Value and 'worth it' is in the eye of the beholder.

Thank you all for advices. Overall, I think it's a ok price here in Houston. I searched on diff popular auto sites, found only 6 4wd within 500 miles in close price range. I will check and testdrive it again. I believe there is still room for me to lower the price.:rockon:

I wouldnt say its a horrible deal but for the miles and the issues that you pointed out I would be willing spend about $5,000 for that one. But again as someone else stated pictures would also be helpful!

Personally I wouldn't buy it just for the fact the toyota dealer of all sellers is willing to resale a vehicle needing valve gaskets! What other services does it need that they could easily take care of ensuring that you would have a vehicle that was as sound as possible. No wonder its supposedly priced fairly cause they know your looking at about 2k or more in services. Not to mention your going to pay more money out the door in full taxes, dealer fees and such.

Although it sounds like only a few things are worn seat, steering wheel etc. those should really be holding up better. I had a 96 with 200k and the drivers seat was just slightly worn. My 97 limited purchased last year not far from showroom cond but still needed a ridiculous amount of services to get 100k more trouble free. Someone was pretty hard on it. Not to mention you won't get any service hx with the car I would bet. If your really set in it I would negotiate new gaskets, fluids, timing belt etc and use the leverage how can you justify pushing customers adhere to recommended service guidelines when you can sell a vehicle used or not knowing it has a major issue and not taking care of it? The point is it is a used vehicle and sold as such, but a company such as toyota should and usually does a better job with doing a 120 point inspection and at least fixing major issues.

I paid $3500 for my 97' Limited 4x4 with 212k miles from a private sale. One owner truck, clean carfax.
Frame is mostly rust free, aside from dents and and scratches (it is a good 30ft'r.....could use a paint job I guess). Interior is good, has some scratches and the drivers seat has some tears. It runs good, has a little bit of a lifter tap-tap, and tracks straight down the road. Suspension is tired and the shocks are shot. I am putting a a little money into her, but even after I replace the entire suspension/rims/tires....I'll still be under $7k. Even if the engine/tranny completely exploded tomorrow, I could put in a new tranny for $1500 and a few grand for a new engine and have a 4Runner that drove like new for around $10k. In your case, it sounds like you are going to be around the $7k mark once you get it to a safe, reliable running condition. Like others have said, unless the dealer works with you on the repairs at a serious discount, I would walk. Good luck!
