Is this a problem?

Well i was out the whole day and my dad decided to change the tranny oil today. well he got the gasket kit but he got the wrong tranny fluid. he put in dexron 3 instead of dexron 2. could this be a problem? when i got home i took it for a drive and it seems like my tr4 got slower.

You should be just fine with the Dextron III fluid. Dextron II was the current tech fluid untill III came out in the mid 1990's. The III formula replaced the II and is backwards compatable as far as I understand. Since you cannot get Dextron II any more, III would be the fluid of choice.

After a total fluid change, it may take a bit to get the trans back to what it "felt" like before the change. You have fresh, thicker fluid in there, and that will act different than your old, worn out fluid.

Be sure to check your fluid level periodically over the next few days to be sure that no air pockets or voids gave you a false reading. Otherwise, just continue to enjoy your truck!

Slippage is not good. Did it slip before? If it did not, you may need to open it up again and make sure everything is seated well.
If it was slipping before, you may have bigger problems than needing a fluid change.

beat'cha! j/k no it did not slip before. i took it for another test drive and it doesnt slip any more. the first time i took it for a test drive it slipped like 2 times.

Your okay, long as it's not dexron 5, they went to synthetic then.

UPDATE! Well i noticed some problems on my runner. The tranny slips once in a while. Sometimes when i press the gas it feels like it stays in one gear for a while. The rpm rises up to 4000ish when that happens. I have o/d on and ect off.

*i keep telling my dad every night about these problems and he refuses to listen. he says "all we did was change the fluids Mark!"
i told him if the tranny goes im taking my ol' prelude back.

Changing the fluid shouldn't make it slip. If it's slipping it was going out anyways, and maybe the fluid change could have made it show up a little sooner. (unless like what Gryphon said : There could be air pockets, causing fluid to be lower than specs-causing slipping. I know that the automatics (can't remember the # off hand) in the 2nd gen's can have problems of slippage from time to time. A 90 2door runner I had about 6 years ago started slipping at about 150,000, but it didn't get any worse over the next 25,000 miles or so. I didn't get a chance to find out what went wrong in the tranny as it got stolen around 175,000 miles or so. But I've heard of a couple other people having problems with that tranny.

If you never changed it or it was 75K since you changed it last you could loosen up the gunk that has just been sitting in there causeing the valves to stick and such.

Most tranny guys will tell you if you never changed it or it has allot of miles on it you are better off topping it off and just driving it untill it dies, changing it just speed up the death.

Well we purchased it in 00 and i don't think the previous owner has changed it.

I would maybe talk to a trusted tranny shop about what I said in my post.

how many quarts go into a 95? at winchester auto they gave my dad 2 quarts only. but when he went to drain the original fluid it came to +3 quarts. is it the same amount for 4x4 too?

No that could be your problem the 4wd automatic takes 4.5 quarts. yours takes 1.7 2wd automatic.

the previous owner must've put in +3quarts. well my pops put in another 1.5 quarts in making it 3.5 quarts all together. why does it feel like it drives better? it doesn't jump gears in the beginning, no slipping, doesn't hold in certain gears anymore. when it had 1.7 quarts i noticed a lot of problems.

What does your dipstick read?

Give Toyota a call and see what they say you need to drain and re-fill?

Maybe it is different on the 95 then the 93 different tranny maybe.
