Is this bad? And what is this?

Hi all!

I was poking around my car checking fluids. I Thought let me check down the filler neck to see if i can see any problems. (PIC1) . Not sure if that is sludge or just stained metal. Engine idles well, (700rpm) has a lot of power. So am opening up schrodinger box by looking? The car was well maintained, except for the past 1-2 years. where it was barely used. I would say 90% of its life it has had good routine oil changes at dealer. maybe the last 2years every 6 months, but only 1-2k miles during that time.

Currently OEM Filter and extended performance M1 oil in there. ~6 months old about to do an oil change. oil looks brand new though.


Another question for you guys:

Also is this oil around the throttle body? I googled pics, cant seem to find why it would. Only explanation google has taught me, if pvc is bad, there could be oil in throttle body. I think pvc was changed 10-20k miles ago. Going to change it again soon just in case.

Under my fill cap looks like that as well. It's clean under the valve covers.

Looks fine. Just keep during what you are doing.

No biggie about the TB area though do look inside and if it is dirty clean it and replace the PCV with a new OEM one.

So I guess the only way is to take the valve cover off? I guess I can also look under the pvc valve as well.

If your valve covers aren't leaking I wouldn't bother opening it to investigate further. You said everything runs great and the motor is strong.

If there's one thing I've learned from these trucks in my time, it's (I'm sure I sound like a broken record) "if it ain't broke don't fix it"

yeah mine has looked the same for over 100k now and all has been very well, run your favorite de-carbonizer if ya' like (e.g. seafoam, startron, marvel oil, etc. etc. in the motor oil) and only full synthetic motor oil will help to clean and keep it clean in the long run.

Guess I am overthinking as usual Thanks all
might have been from a while ago. The valve cover looks stained, but I only see a little oil weeping from the passenger side rear half moon area. Looks like toyota didn't spend the extra 5 seconds to reseal the area when they did valve covers 4 years ago.

I'll keep an eye on it. if gets anyworse, maybe ill just do that one side. I'll continue with synthetic. I just buy topshelf when they are on sale. Just got 10 quarts mobile 1 for 20-25 bucks after rebate...

Taking it of wouldn't really show you anything. Most likley under the cover its clean.
