Is your 4Runner your main vehicle?

I have a 97 4Runner, a 08' Honda Odyessy, and a 13' VW Jetta TDI.

I love the mileage and reliability of the TDI, but sometimes I consider selling the Jetta (although I bought it for $5k off of MSRP, I am still going to loose some $$$) so that I can get rid of the payment.

I bought the 4Runner about 4 months after I bought the Jetta as an "extra emergency vehicle for foul weather".......a full suspension replacement later, I am addicted to this beast and love driving her.

Anyone else in a similar situation? I need to do the math on the mileage difference, but I still think i will win if I just keep the 4Runner. Thoughts?

I use my 243K mile 4Runner everyday right now. My 740i sits at home. When the weather breaks, the BMW will see more action but still not everyday.
That said, my BMW is 13 years old and super clean. It'd be hard to replace which is why I don't use it everyday and subject it to everyday abuse. Not to knock you but a '13 Jetta is very replaceable. If I were in your shoes, I'd drive the Jetta, take advantage of the MPG and make the 4Runner a weekend toy.

I work from home, so the 4Runner is just fine as a DD, for the last 15 years. If I had to commute, I'd get a 2nd high-mpg car. I will keep this beast until I can't keep it running. That looks to be a good long-time yet, and may end when I run out of steam, and not the Runner.

Mine is my one and only. After getting it with only 55K on the clock it will probably be my last.

Don't mistake that for neglect. I bought it new off the lot in '97, it's always been meticulously maintained, and it still runs and looks like new today.

It used to be driven more regularly, but now I'm just happy to keep it around for when I do decide to drive it.

Have two kids and sold my daily s2k and got the current 3rd gen with 210k miles. Did the main 100k tune up + HG. Now working on front suspension for preventive and plan to daily this for the next 100k atleast.

My 4Runner is now in the mix between my girlfriends Car and my bicycle. Bike commute is about 9.4 miles, so when the weather is extremely bad, I'll take the 4Runner. When I feel like riding in the girlfriends '05 Honda Accord, i'll take that. I just love choices.

My '99 was my Daily driver for 10+ years. I now have a work vehicle that I take home so my 4Runner gets the garage treatment. I drive it about twice every two weeks. At 177K it deserves a break. We usually drive my wife's FJ Cruiser now when we go out.

I wasn't referring to neglect, I was referring to it feeling lonely because its owner doesn't use it much...hahaha

That's awesome that you've had it from day one and care for it like you say you do. I've seen too many beat down for no reason other than stupidity and laziness.

My 96 was my DD for 10 years, now its primarily a trail vehical.

My 97 was purchased for getting around in the winter snows and to drive to work while the larger amount of contract workers are on our site. We also have an issue with a lot of deer in our area. It is a supplemental vehicle that llows me to park in tight spots and if abused, it can live without a lot of body shop attention. My lowered 11 GMC and my wifes 09 Pontiac G8 are what we use for everything else.

I am basically new to the Toyota world, however the 97 Runner is in great shape for one with 206,000 miles on it.

The 96 with 260,xxx miles on it is my everything driver. On the rare occasions I have the 96 apart to fiddle with I'll drive the 99. The hubby usually drives that one.

My 98 Impreza with 238K takes the DD duties.

My 4Runner has seen less than 3,000 miles since June.

My Tacoma even less than that.

my 4runner is my first and only car so far. i drive her everyday and shes provided me with everything i need. At roughly ~19-20mpg its not too bad. When we carpool, i can fit everyone at ease. And since im still young and reckless, she keeps me out of trouble. (thank god i dont have a sportscar)

'98 Ltd. & 476,000 km in 16 years of daily driving. Before that was my 360,000 km '89 Runner SR5
1st spot of rust showed up this winter (under the door weather stripping) which I will have fixed this year.
Absolutely flawless other than regular maintenance.
Love it as much a s when I got it new.
911 is my summer weekender. )
