Isolate DRL control on stalk

Hey all,

I know about bending the pin in the relay to completely disable the DRL function, but I was wondering if you could still use the DRL function on the stalk to activate an aftermarket relay? I want to run LEDs in the high beam spot, but still use the DRL position on the stalk to activate some lights in the grille.

Complicated I know, but was just curious if it was even possible?

Thanks

this was located in the Modifications, Write-Ups, Quick Links, and FAQ's "sticky" (all this means is this thread is stuck to the top of the page on the main subforum, it never moves down to get lost) thread

Also please do not just read the title of the thread and think it is all that thread consists of. That thread has a ton of good info about DRLs (turning on/off whenever, etc.) and likely the answer to your question is in there.

This is good info but I'm not sure its what I read the OP is looking for. I'm also thinking of maybe using the DLR mode to do something else.

The mod outlined above is for having the DLR on all the time.

Here is my thought and I think its along the same thought as the OP. In my '17 TRD Offroad Premuim I have off - dlr - park - on for my lighting options. The TRDORP doesn't have an automatic headlight option.

Personally I like the dlr mode but would really like it front and back.

Here are some of my thoughts on what to do or extras
  • Tap the DLR wire coming from Pin #2 on the relay to trigger another relay and activate other lights
  • Tap the DLR wire coming from Pin #2 on the relay and tap into the parking lights. There would also be a diode to prevent the parking lights energizing the DLR circuit.

Is the wire coming off of the relay tap-able or is it all solid state?

Is there a harness that can be added between the relay and socket to facilitate wire taping? Something like a city light tap that I've used on my motorcycle.

Want the easiest, no cost solution? Leave the parking lights on all the time. They will automatically go off when you turn off the vehicle and will come back on next time you restart it. Then the parking lights and daytime running lights will all be on.

The parking and headlights do go off after a few minutes on their own. Or they can be turned off manually by hitting "lock" on the remote two times. I just leave mine "on" all the time, then when I park I just hit the button twice.

I always lock, and I always lock using the remote to avoid leaving the keys in the car (can't be locked in the car if they are in my hand).

The double-press is a habit from an older car anyway; on the older car the first press locked the doors and the second chirped the horn, but only if all doors were closed securely. I liked to hear the horn chirp for 100% assurance the doors were locked.

I appreciate the link, but yeah I've scoured everything DRL related but have yet to find anyone still utilizing the stalk switch and its potential. I don't mind disabling it, but It feels wrong to me to just have a non working switch when it could be used for something if I could get a grip on the wiring. I'm not electrical engineer unfortunately...

Yeah exactly, I'd like to figure out how to tap that #2 pin and use that signal to run another relay, but I'm not sure the best way to do that. Those relays are like $100 online so if you try to mod it, then your playing with that cost :scared:

Very Very Interesting

I just tested this and here is what happened.

Model - 2017 Off-road Premium

I turned the stalk light selector to the parking light position.

Key Position
  • Off - No external lights on
  • Accessory - No external lights on
  • Run - not running - No external lights on
  • Run - running - DLR on, Parking on
  • Off - running -> shut down -> key removed - No external lights on

Side effects
  • My dash lights were in 'night' mode while the stalk selector was in park mode. This isn't a huge deal, but darkened the instrument cluster and put the Entune radio into night mode. To fix this I had to adjust the rheostat all the way up and past the 'notch'. This then put everything into 'day' mode.
  • Its not a huge deal but I would need to adjust the lights down every time I drove at night.

Final thoughts
  • In my '17 leaving the parking lights on will meet 90% of my needs. This will add front and rear visibility. I'm also planning to add DDM Saber 9005 40w into my High/DLR socket.
  • I will be trying this for a while.
  • This does not repurpose the DLR mode for a different use. Perhaps someone could comment on the ability splice or tap the relay wiring, that would be more in-line with the OP's question.
  • With people showing interest in bending pins on a $100+ relay, perhaps there is a market for an 'extension' harness allowing people to disable the DLRs in a reversible manor. This type of harness would also give a wire tapping point.

Interesting, I'll have to try this out! If the light adjustment is all the way up to get it out of night mode I wonder what happens when you go to low beams? I'll try it out. If that works seamlessly, I could get by with the DRL thing and use switch backs as the DRL...

When I turned my low beams on nothing changed. I had to adjust the rheostat in order to bring down the brightness and go into night mode on my dashboard.

I am new to the 4runners. I just got my 2017 TRD Off road . When I switch to the DLR on my stalk the DLR light does not come on. The low and high beam works when I switch on the headlights but the DLR don't seem to work. Am I missing a step somewhere? Thanks
