ISR vs CAI

So I've been reading up on the ISR mod to see if I want to do it. Seems like a cheap way to at least increase throttle response, if not a little HP as well.

Here's my question at the moment: besides saving money, what's the main difference between this mod and an after market CAI system?

While I'm on the topic, is there any consensus about the best after market CAI for the 3.4L? And what is the easiest way to get the new pipe needed for the ISR mod? Looks like se folks have gotten something custom made at a muffler shop, but is there an off the shelf part that will work?

If you want to do a CAI, do the ISR mod, with the deck plate mod. That's what many of us do. Much cheaper too!

I believe if you want an off the shelf item that can work for an ISR, a Pringles can perhaps? (Please don't use a Pringles can) Or go to autozone/O'reillys/Napa they have exhaust tips there that could work. That is what I used before I found whatever I used for the ISR. (I don't have a name for what it is.)
 
Airaid makes a tube just search ebay or amazon for it. Not really a noticeable power gain per say, but a huge gain in throttle response over just the ISR (my personal experience of course). For perspective though, I ordered it with no expectation of power gain, my OEM intake tube was just shot out and I bought it cause it looked cleaner.

Thanks. Looked on eBay and all I can find from Airraid are full I take systems for hundreds of dollars. Is there a part number or more specific name I can search?

I got mine a year ago for $158.00 on Amazon.

Get the Dry Filter.

It works very well, easy to install, nice air filter that actually fits.
Without question gives much better throttle response.
and combined with a free flow muffler should give slightly better gas mileage like between 1-2mpg on highway.
Haven't seen much improvement in city, if there is any its like under 1mpg.

1-2 hwy mpgs with the airaid and deck plate mod??? Just wanna confirm before I give it a try....

Ummm yes and no, not JUST the Airaid and deck plate mod but also a freer flowing muffler. Plus the air filter change that comes with the Airaid kit.
So the engine is breathing better IN and OUT.

In my case the total cost for all was $258, on my close to 8000 mile cross country trip I believe I saved approx $150+ in fuel cost, so it almost paid for itself in one month.

Great response - thanks for taking the time Nunyabiz! Now I've got to add that to my list of stuff to do. Of all things, the only part of my runner that has any rust is the muffler, not much just some surface towards the back but that's a reason to replace! Any particular one off the net you'd recommend? then i'll take it to a muffler shop....

Well I personally would recommend the Borla 40665.
It is the one I went with after making the mistake of trying the Magnaflow 24".

While the Magnaflow 18" and smaller seem to be fine, the larger and quieter 24" clearly has a serious design flaw and WILL screw up in short order.

The Borla I think is a nicer muffler all around though, breathes very well, sounds good, quiet at idle, well made, no complaints.
Cost is under $100.
