ISR vs Elbow Removal vs Deckplate mod?

Hello, I have just researched the intake mods and there seems to be lots of confusion on what mods to do now and what ones not to do so I am here looking for some suggestions.

Basically, what mod(s) should I do to my stock 2001 4runner?

I have heard to remove the silencer and the elbow but forget about the deckplate mod? Does that sound right?

One guy on yotatech said just remove the elbow...etc

So just trying to clarify on what mod I should do.

Thanks a lot!

I think you should leave it stock. There's nothing wrong with the stock intake. That's a pretty easy mod too.

Agreed, leave it stock. Everyone who has done various mods on the intake seems to get bored of them or don't like the noise.

If you want to do something I suggest doing the AirRaid M.I.T intake tube. Keeps the stock airbox, cleans up the engine bay. Plus will free up airflow. All while keeping the noise down to a minimum

I have my silencer removed and deck plate mod. I had 18mpg before mod, 2000 miles since mod I still have 18mpg. So there is no increase in mpg at all if that is what you are looking for. It does have noticeably more power from 2500-3700, I haul my motocross bike and do interstates to get to the track, far fewer downshifts since mod. The engine seems to not struggle as much on inclines. I do take advantage of the increased power, if I drove more conservatively I may see an mpg increase, but that will never happen.

The noise is a non issue for me, personally I think it sounds better. By the time you are above 60 wind noise and road noise block out the engine anyway.

Thank you.

Did you remove the elbow as well?

We at least want to remove the silencer and replace that big box with the straight pipe, I see that is a huge restriction.

We would enjoy a little more sound without getting a full exhaust, and a little more power doesn't hurt either.

edit: I also looked up the AirRaid M.I.T intake tube, I guess that replaces the silencer as well correct?

I guess i'll start with the removal of the silencer and see how I like it.

I'm not going to cut a hole in the airbox, I might remove the elbow to see how it sounds and that's about it.

I haven't gotten around to do the deck plate mod yet, but when I had the stock exhaust I liked how it sounded. Now I can't hear it over my flowmaster lol.

Thank you.

Intake mods on these motors to make more power is as effective as putting a bigger power cord on your computer to make it run faster. The computer determines how big the power cord NEEDS to be, not the other way around.

The 'silencer' is a Helmholtz resonator, a PERFORMANCE ENHANCING product that Toyota added (at added expense), not a silencer.

Not trying to start an argument. Spend your time and money on things that make your truck more capable and reliable, not louder.

It is no coincidence that my truck downshifts less when set on cruise on the same stretch of road at the same speed now that the silencer is removed. I've never seen dyno numbers and I don't need to because that is very easy to see that the engine is making more usable mid range power and hills aren't killing it as much.

The same science was explained on the wrx silencers. That they actually increase performance. Then people started taking them off with dyno numbers to prove otherwise.

A helmholtz resonator IS a silencer. It's essentially an echo-box that creates a phase shift and cancels out frequencies. Performance from a NVH standpoint yes, but it shouldn't affect the amount of air flow. I'm not sure what it does as far as affecting the turbulence of the airflow though.

Actually these intake mods are pretty common, and have been proven.

On my Audi S4 cutting holes in the bottom of the airbox is actually very normal and actually proves better gains than the $300 intake systems for the car.

I fully believe removing this restrictive "resonator" would also provide gains as people have accounted for and some even dyno proven gains. The computer can recalculate it-self based on the new amount of airflow the engine is receiving.

^ completely agree with this. Back in 03 I had a wrx and was on all the forums with everyone saying that removing the silencer was only for extra noise and showed no gains. Then some guys with dyno access were showing cleaner power curves with actual power increase at certain rpms.

What I'm saying don't expect peak power increase. Rather more usable power. Less restriction and cleaner flow equals a cleaner power curve.

I have owned big v8 rams, wrxs, hondas, and everything in between. But all of them still like the simple mods that make sense. If it makes sense, just do it.

Just to add some more conspiracy and fuel to the fire. I actually got 18.7 mpg on my last fill up driving like a normal driver. But conspire away and justify that I made the numbers this way. I drove conservatively, but not like a prius driver.

How about you all agree to disagree?

I'm doing it whether the engineers or the Drivers agree or don't agree!

Gives me something to MAN TALK about and I think all us gear heads can agree on that!?!?!?!

Deck plate mod = 5-8 rwhp with dyno graph for proof:
Project SportRunner
Not my site. Just something I ran across the internet. He also did the silencer removal. Claims better throttle response at the expense of more noise. No increase in power.

So there you have it. Someone who did a methodical approach with proof to back it up. Should you do it? Completely up to you.

At the minimum I will be doing the deck plate mod myself. Not so sure about removing the silencer since my throttle response seems just fine for me. If I want to get sporty I just hop into my 93 MR2 with customer header and exhaust or my 02 Honda VFR and give the throttle a good twist. My 4Runner is for towing, expeditions and family transport around town.

I've done ISR and deckplate.

i got a nice polished tube for the ISR mod.

ISR mod = more noise from the glove comp area. Haven't noticed any power gains but I guess it does have slightly better throttle response. It sounds 'cheap' from the cabin, so not a big fan of it. But when I got the borla mufflers, it's little bit like surround sound (front and back) so I just kept it and too lazy to go back to stock.

deckplate = no noticeable increase in power, but I did get the one of those high flow air filter. Again, cheap easy mods to do.

What did gave me the most noticeable power gain was when I put in a new OEM fuel filter. I think the old one was 15+ yrs (180k miles) from the factory. If you haven't done that, you should do that first.

.

Just so everyone's clear, that 5-8Hp on a SUPERCHARGED 4Runner, which is consuming more air than the intake was originally engineered for, and the gains are still so slight you won't be able to tell the difference.

Messing with the intakes on these things is just a waste of time. It's just not a restriction at stock power levels.
