I thought you already checked your TPS and AFM?

A bad AFM r TPS could definitely cause this. Check out the FSM in the sticky and find the EFI section that covers the AFM. There are very detailed instructions on how to test the values of the AFM and TPS under certain conditions.

I did test them, but I did not clean the AFM, I will do that tomorrow.

Something that I read told me that it is not very consistant testing and that they should be cleaned when you take them apart (which the manual did not do).

I will clean it and try again to see what the results are with that, given what I am finding, I don't think it will do anything, but I will try it any way as it should be done.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!

I took off the AFM and found that when I went to pull it apart that it was not all hooked up inside. The wires were not connected inside the box.

I borrowed one from a neighbor (and just met him too) and he loaned me the one that was on his truck (a V6 90' 4Runner).

I brought it home and put it on the truck and no more hesitation, no more stalling out. Still needs to be tuned up and so on (not a surprise as it has been sitting for a long, long time). I will now pick up a new AFM from the auto store (or I may check pick a part first as they list for $180.00 from autozone!) should be able to find it MUCH cheaper then that I would think.

So the hunt is on now, I will have to see what I find. Thanks for the help everyone!

I guess that the device still tested okay when not hooked up, I may see if I can re-connect the wires and get it working again.

What step in the FSM did you use to test the AFM?

The troubleshooting in the EFI section should have caught that.
Did you use the steps per the FSM below:

That is what I used, not sure why it did not tell me the issue, but long story short, I now know that that is the MAJOR issue.

Even with that fixed (by using my friend AFM) it still is not "Right" but it is working and now I can address the other issues.

I will see about getting a replacement tomorrow.

I wouldn't say I was right, no more than anyone else. We all try to help with what we can.

I am very surprised that the test in the FSM would be normal if things are un plugged in the AFM.

Oh well, we learn something new all the time. I would have completely over looked the AFM if it tested out fine per the FSM.

CONGRATULATIONS !!!!

On finding the major source of your 3-3,500 rpm hesitation! That-is-great!

In thinking back through your troubleshooting I am not sure why some of the things you did didnot give a better indication that this was the problem. But irregardless the AFM is easy to check statically and how-cool that you were able to borrow your neighbors and verify it as the source of the problem. I'll bet that felt good to hear it run near-correct!

I also had good new... the source of my fast-idle problem when the fan and no A/C turned out to be with the A/C Amplifier circuit board. I believe I was able to repair the circuit board; I found a hairline crack and could flex the board and make the symptom come and go.

So even if we have to pay full-price for our parts we came out ahead as we learned more about our 3VZ engines and didn't have to pay anyone to work on them for us.
