It's a dark day in my house (warning: sad read ahead)

Well it's not a good day for me and my lady. We have no kids but we have three dogs that are basically our children. The pet owners on here know how it is. Last night our Boston terrier, Samurai, wasn't feeling too well. We thought he might have eaten something that did not agree with his stomach, it's happened before. This morning my wife wakes me up asking me to help move him because he'd gotten his head stuck between the mattress and footboard. I came to look at him and it was not good. Short, labored breathing, barely moving, not responsive. He had gotten up a few times in the night, but wasn't drinking water. We were gonna take him to vet but it was still too early. My wife had to drop off something at work so I called in to my work, stayed with him so when time came I could move him in my work truck. About 15 minutes after my wife left he started to moan, a sound I'd never heard him make before, and he kind of just slowly stopped breathing. He was in my arms when he went. Here is a pic from his younger days. He would have turned 7 in April.

This was his guilty face, like the time he ate my favorite jacket...

For my T4R peeps, pour a little for my Boston terror, Samurai, he was fearless, loving, playful, and everything that you could ask of man's best friend.

Sorry to hear of your loss. It's never easy to say goodbye to those you love. At least he was with you and comforted by your presence rather than being alone for those last moments. :moping:

Sorry

Well it's not a good day for me and my lady.

I feel your pain. And wanted to warn others who may be reading this post. My lab almost died about a month ago from Tick Paralysis Syndrome. Weakness in the hind quarters progressing to entire body so all she could do was lay there. Still had an appetite, but couldn't lift her head to eat. Massive amount of drool, no diarrhea or vomiting.

Two different vets didn't like my prognosis of Tick Paralysis, because ya know, I read it on the Internet. Over $2000 in tests later, we brought her home to die. And then I found the tick and pulled it. Within half a day, she was sitting up again. It took another month, but she's back to normal. This was the first time I've ever seen this, so I suspect it's pretty rare, but figured if I saved someone's dog, it's worth this post.

Sorry again about your friend.

Thanks Jernik. Yeah I was with him at least he was not alone. Don't think my wife could have handled that. BodietheDog, yeah Sam had bad diarrhea, he was drooling a lot. It was not til really early that the breathing changed. In hindsight I could have taken him to a vet at 7am but we wanted to wait for our regular vet to open. He did not have an appetite at all and would not drink water or eat ice chips. Did your lab get sick suddenly? Sam changed within hours I swear last night he was jumping all over the bed and this morning he's gone. Crazy day

Very sorry to see this, I lost my first dog to cancer 3 years ago, and it was the worst day of my life. Sorry to hear about Samurai. At least you have several good years of memories with him

Here is Samurai with Sherman our fawn pug. These two were partners in crime. The vet said he will likely be looking for Sam when he notices that he is not around

I'm sorry for your loss man, he looked like a great dog. Its the toughest thing in the world to be there when they pass, but I've been there every time and wouldn't have it any other way. We owe them so much for a lifetime of loyalty. He will be waiting for you on the other side.

My heart aches for your loss. I adopted this guy when I met my girlfriend and he's up there in age and I fear the day. IMG_1565.JPG

This was the first time I've had to experience this. He was probably in pain but aside from those slight whimpers at the end, he was so calm. It was rough for sure. I always thought he would get run over since he had escaped before. Thanks for the support yall I appreciate it.

There is a song that I've been listening to a lot by Tim Mcgraw "My old friend" it's pretty fitting if you've ever lost anyone

I'm so sorry for your loss :( It's never easy losing one but especially losing them when they're so young. My Great Dane, pictured to the left in my avatar with me, is now 11.5 years. His time is coming to an end and everyday you treat it like it's their last. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of need

sorry for your loss. it might be tough for a little bit. but it's the price we pay to have dogs. it doesn't get any easier, either. i've said good-bye to two, and i'll soon be saying good-bye to a third. he's at least 12, and a big dog. back legs are starting to not do what he wants.

my first dog lived to be 18 years old. second was 12, and it was harder to say good-bye to him. i still look for him once in a while..., but he's been gone for 8 years. i was with him when he died.

still can't imagine not having a dog. too much joy for most of their lives to let the sadness of the end prevent it.

wally

I wanna say thanks to all of you who took the time to share my pain. I've been out of town for work, so I'll see how things are when I get home. I dreamt about the last moments he was alive and I think that's gonna stay with me for a while. I wish we had taken more pictures with him

Hey 5ontheFloor - I'm so sorry about your little guy. That last picture of him with his tongue sticking out is adorable and I think I get a feel for what a sweet little dog he must have been despite the mischief.

For whatever its worth, I'm a vet, and if Samurai crashed and passed away that quickly there's a really good chance that even if you had rushed him to a vet hospital as soon as you noticed something wrong he still wouldn't have made it - the vets may have been able to prolong the outcome by a couple hours, but most of the time when we have patients come in that have crashed that hard and that suddenly it's because something has gone catastrophically wrong and can't be corrected. It's bewildering and unfair how quickly dogs (and people too, I suppose) can go from healthy to dying. There are a lot of health conditions that dogs can be very good at hiding and sometimes we only find out once it's too late - I don't think there's anything you or your wife could have done differently that would have changed this outcome.

I have no kids and two dogs, and my little brother and best friend both have Bostons, and one of my favourite patients is a Boston. I love the breed. Their personality is so much bigger than their size. I'm so sorry for your loss and wish the best for you.

Sorry for your loss, I dread the day of losing one of my pups, our oldest is 9yrs. Best dog I have ever owned. Dogs are definitely family, and sometimes my wife thinks I am closer to them than to her or our son. Again my condolences.
