its not just the 99s and newer that have trans temp sensor...

thats right, my 97 has one, factory installed on all runners i even think the 96s had them. i dont know where it is located but this last weekend my father inlaw told me they all had them and i was kinda skept! as my "A/T OIL TEMP" light came on in dash(my auto meter trans temp gauge was also pegged at 250* and yeah i was starting to hear some pinging in the engine when under load so i just stopped and opened the hood and let it run for about 15 min at idle and temps dropped back down... at about the same time as my auto meter gauge unpegged the "idiot light" went out so i think it is triggered some where above 250*. anyhow not trying to say that our older rigs should work with the scan gauge as far as trans temp is concerned but we do have a temp sensor.

I believe its a different type of sensor. The idiot light on the dash is supposed to light up when the fluid reaches a certain temperature (all 4runners have this light), where as in the 99-02 models the sensor actually consistently reads the fluid temperature level and sends it to the computer.

Rumor had it that the sensors didn't trip until around 300* but that is good to know its closer to 250*

yes but some of the post i have read in the past indicated that the older rigs 96-98 didnt have any sensor... i am simply just trying to let everyone know that yes infact we all have a sensor, its just that the newer 99-02s have a temp sending unit to the OBD II witch the earlier ones did not. i had been running my rig very slow and in 4low with a lot or stress and load on the tranny with no air flow to speak of to attain the light coming on on me... but then again i am glad i went with the bigger 70624 instead of the smaller 70628 tranny cooler but even with that im wondering if i should get another one, as i will be doing a good long wheeling trip this summer in cali in the end of aug and it will probably be at least 90* during the day(tonight when i did this it was between 60-70*)
