ITT Tech Closes Doors For Good - U.S. Dept. of Education Investigates

It's a shame that they screwed so many students. There's one of their schools close to that was shown on the news last night and interviewed students who just found out.

[MENTION=58830]JWaldz[/MENTION] - any indications that you're student loans will be affected? I hope so for your sake but suspect they won't on the grounds that they provided the education.

If they prove that the company 100% defrauded it's students there is a high chance of me getting some sort of forgiveness. Wont know until then. I am however going to start a claim no matter what, b/c trying is better than just sitting here waiting. As for recent graduates and students that were enrolled they will have a few options available.
 
Go for it! The more students/graduates that do so the better the chance for success. Good luck and best wishes for success.

Did you get a job as a result of your education there?

I really don't know anything about them outside of their commercials. What was your experience with them?

They cost almost twice as much in the long run. So for instance, an associates degree damn near cost as much as a bachelors at a normal university. They just find ways to tack on money and don't offer any sort of scholarship or similar programs to help reduce the amount. My overall experience with them wasn't what their ads portray them to be. They didn't really help me much after I graduated. They didn't really teach me a whole lot, I feel like I could have learned what I know now by myself with a little persistence. They allowed me to use some credits from a previous university I attended but they didn't use them all for some reason. So I was forced to take classes I basically already took.

OP, what part of country are you in? I have been out of town but while I was back in Austin, the local talk radio shows were talking with grads and advisors alike who praised ITT for its pool of students that graduated and subsequently found jobs in the fields they were looking for. I have no personal experience with them only what I have seen on TV commercials

I've worked with, worked for, and employed a good number of ITT grads over the years and with very few exceptions, they've all been stellar. A bit light on the hard tech/science but their aptitude and work ethic more than made up for it.

So maybe the school and it's methods might have sucked... but in my relatively small (<30) sample size, I've had better results with ITT grads than those from some bigger-name universities. I know it's far from scientific, but I'd hire another ITT grad in a heartbeat.

So don't feel too shitty about having an ITT degree I guess is what I'm saying. Not everyone thinks they're crap.
 
I feel your pain OP. My wife went to a for profit nursing school for her AD in Nursing. When she started, they promised they would be nationally certified by the end of her time. Three years later, she has an RN degree, but no nationwide cert so a lot of companies won't hire her (mostly hospitals). Plus she has a rather large bill, the school closed, and now there's nothing we can do about it. If you graduate and within 120 days the school closes you can have student loans forgiven, but you're on the hook after that time.
 
I've always been a bit wary of those types of operations.

Having known students and instructors from companies such as WyoTech and their kind; they are usually more interested in your money than training you properly.

I forget which one it was (WyoTech or their other competitor) but they eventually closed their doors because they couldn't keep their promise of putting graduates in mid-high level technician positions (so people were spending 11k+ for rushed training to be start in the field at a promised higher level, but at best they were getting lube tech positions.)

A lot of those companies seem to promise more than they deliver and hope that you don't notice as they take your money. A shame really, seems like you'd better off sinking money in a college/university and hoping your degree isn't useless.

I'm guessing the radio shows were sponsored with advertising dollars from ITT Tech.

These type of schools are fraud factories that prey on low income families and the military. They use federal tax loans to fund the students and when the students can't pay back the loans it falls to the taxpayer (eg me and you) to pay for them as part of the federal budget.

It's a scam. All for-profit schools schools should be banned from recurving all federal education funding. The government should not be funding "for profit" schools.
 
If only there was a presidential candidate who liked the ITT Tech business model so much he started his own university which was subsequently shut down by the government for suspicion of fraud? Oh wait .... There is!

Actually the DJS were dissing the school it was callers calling in who were praising ITT. That was the purpose of my question. Austin is a tech town so I can understand there would be a higher rate of success stories here than other places not so tech inclined. Personally, I did not go to college after graduation, I worked, gained experience while making money, worked my way up to highest level in my trade and now own my own business. Meanwhile, my classmates that went to UT and got their history major are working counter at Barnes and Noble. Either way, it's a bad deal for all involved especially those now left in the lurch with this closing
 
Its not really fair comparison to compare a tech school, of whatever quality, to a history major. Two totally different field and industries. I understand your point but I still think "for-profit" schools are ripoff factories.

I see your point too. Just putting out there personal experience related to me by former classmates. I definitely don't agree with their for-profit models much like I don't agree with for-profit healthcare but that's a discussion for another time. The way I see it, whether you go to ITT or UT or Harvard, there are no guarantees that you will end up in a high paying job that provides years of financial success and security. Are your chances better with that piece of paper? Sure. But I don't believe it entitles anyone to success. Still a shame what has happened
