I've had several sets come through my shop. Customer purchased/supplied mount and balance sorta deal.

Never have I seen a set that are even comparable to a new tire. Most have needed excess weight to balance, have had widely varying hard and soft spots, and/or carcass rot or patches from tire repairs done during the previous tires life.

and that's before they've even go down the road. Then often enough I've seen tread separation and leaks like brought up already.

What you buy is up to you of course but of all the things I might take a gamble on my tires would be one of the last.

Just as I thought - used junk. Even if you have that fancy new recap, you are still running on some old arse tire carcass that has been through who the hell knows what. At least nothing bad happened in your situation.

Are they okay for trail rigs? I guess; But aren't there limitations on airing them down compared to a new tire?

Not to say that new tires cannot fail, but at least you know what you are getting with a new tire. Is it really worth saving the extra $150 or-so when you can buy some comparably cheap off-brand tires from Discount Tire with replacement certificates?

They are junk.

Treadwrights air down just fine. I hate to say their "new" design but I believe the airing down issue was with their older tires. I never had a problem.

I saved about 150 a tire when I got my set. I think spending 300+ per tire that will be torn up off road where you will not get the rated mileage....that's a waste. If you have a chill discount tire where you can get away with off road damage and get a replacement more power to you but personally I think that's cheating the system. Wheeling isn't cheap.

IMO a lot of people wheel. I get it that you want a streetable rig but that comes with a price on tires. If you have a trailer queen or local trails that you frequent or your rig just doesn't do the interstate then I don't see the issue with treadwright as long as you know what you're getting into. They are NOT new tires. They have some great grip though. I was impressed with my treadwrights off road. On road they were noisy as hell but that didn't matter because my radio sucked too.

Went to Americas Tire this morning and got 4 new GY Duratracs. Hopefully they last the 50K they are supposed to.
