I've always stuck up for Treadwright here but no more...

I've had my GuardDogs for around 19K miles and the tread looks almost new. They have always rode butter smooth and as far as I was concerned were a great deal. Then last weekend I got on the highway (first time with the 4runner in months since I take the streets to work) and it had a pretty bad vibration.

The vibration was bad at around 70mph but if I slowed down to around 55 it went away so I thought I just lost some weights and hadn't noticed since all my driving time lately was at slow street speed. So I kept going down the highway and just kept the speed slower. Well after a while the vibration got really bad even at the lower speed and I was thinking to myself what the heck is going on here?? Boom! The tire did not flatten immediately. I actually made it to the side of the road before it went completely flat which surprised me after hearing it blow.

After getting home and trying to add air to see where it was coming from (it wasn't obvious, there were cracks and rubber peeling all over) I found the air was leaking from the tread area, not the sidewall.

So needless to say I won't be recommending their tires anymore. I contacted them and they just said "sorry for the inconvenience, if you want you can file a warranty claim...."

Kinda not a major surprise from retreads.

Just be thankful it didn't let loose at a high speed.
 
It's a surprise to me. Treadwright has lots of great reviews. I was going about 60mph when it blew. Fast enough for me.
 
I looked at them once before, but as I asked around the reviews where much to the opposite of good.

Their website however, does say differently.
 
They're great for a trail rig but I wouldn't consider them for a dd. I liked mine and didn't have any problems but I did sell the truck. They are a discount tire perfect for tearing up on the trail.

I agree 100%. I would only run re-treads on a trail rig only.
 
I'd rather have the cheapest made in Myanmar new tires than retreads. But I understand that money is tight, sometimes.
 
Just as I thought - used junk. Even if you have that fancy new recap, you are still running on some old arse tire carcass that has been through who the hell knows what. At least nothing bad happened in your situation.

Are they okay for trail rigs? I guess; But aren't there limitations on airing them down compared to a new tire?

Not to say that new tires cannot fail, but at least you know what you are getting with a new tire. Is it really worth saving the extra $150 or-so when you can buy some comparably cheap off-brand tires from Discount Tire with replacement certificates?

They are junk.

Wow. So is there any guarantee on what used tire casing you get or one time it could be old km2's and the next time say duratracs?
 
Mine have been pretty good. They are pretty beat up though at ~35 000 miles. There is some tread separation going on but I've been keeping an eye on them. I don't know if I'll buy another set of these or something else. I just love that MTR tread pattern on and off road and the new MTR's are so expensive. I routinely run them at 18-20 psi off road and the traction is impressive.

I've owned mine for 30k now, and I have mixed feelings about them... They are by far the toughest tire I have ever come across... I still have 75 percent tread after 30k! For a mud tire that's just amazing. I also have at least 500 miles off road on them including some rocky terrain in Colorado...(they got me from vt to Colorado and back including hundreds of mi off road) oh, and the customer service at Treadwright is amazing.
So why the mixed feelings:
They are incredibly noisy, more than a typical mud. I've seen them on the balance machine, and that image belongs in a horror movie... The carcass looks like it's going to shake itself apart. They are also very heavy, which takes it's toll on your truck and mileage. I have got significant cupping, which adds to the noise. I've gone through everything, it's not my truck, it's the tires... They cannot be balanced 3 dimensionally. So, I'd recomend them on a farm truck, or a trail rig, but not any vehicle that will see regular highway time. The 4runner is my play truck now, not a dd, and I'll be getting some km2's next summer. I think that sums it up!

I have never owned a set, but from what I have read the customer service is good until you try to make a claim. It also seems most of the tires they put out last ok and are more or less a decent value. The problem is the rest have a major defect that creates the potential for catastrophe.

To me a reliable tire is one of the most important things on a DD or trail vehicle. With the places I travel their is no way I would be willing to gamble on a retread leaving me stranded. The only way I would consider a retread would be as a SECOND spare tire. (Yes sometimes I carry two spares). Now if you are a mud bogger type of wheeler and are never far from help/civilization of some sort I guess they might be a good option.

Again this is only my opinion it does seem that many treadwright owners are happy with their decision.
 
had a few buddies run treadwrights with no problems, but after seeing this, I dont think I would ever put these on my rig
 
That's scary. Imagine if the whole tread comes off on the highway. ... even if you don't lose control it would cause major fender damage.

Ibought my tires tight on money. But with goodyears 6 month deferred interest I just paid $200 a month for 6 months.

I almost got cheapies but after doing the mileage per dollar calculation i realized I wasn't saving any money on cheap tires.
