I've got issue's

Like you all did'nt know I've got issue's....lol

I'm going to take the 4R in for an oil change and tire rotate, but I also
have a few concern's that I'm not sure I should bother with or not because of what I've read hear.

1. When driving I come to a stop sign and feel the rear end/tranny bump thingy. It feel's like it downshift's after I stop ( just my guess ) trans. does work fine though, but if I recall that a normal thing and alot of you have it , am I correct ? , and there is no cure for it.

2. Right front rattle which I think is a brake pad . ( that I'll have them look into )

3. Sulfer smell, but only noticed it once so I don't know if I should bother or wait until I can drive with the rear wdw. down. to see if I can still smell it.

I'm also getting my Toyota Xm installed.

I guess my main concern is the tranny / rear end clunk thing. Never heard it until I hit 4000+ miles. I love this truck and maintain it well and detail it alot ( although it's pretty muddy right now ) but I am pretty hard on driving. Alot of stop and go , hard braking , and rocket start's , just my "in a rush style" of being in sale's.

1. do a search on axle wrap. solution is commonly found by lubing it

2. do a search on rattle - brake pad. solution may be loose bolt on swaybar? I forget what it was but I know someone recently had the exact same problem

3. May be a TSB on some of the model years but not all. Check up on this - search as the exact TSB number is listed in the forum

good luck

# 3 - The TSB for sulfur smell does include '06. EG004-06 is the TSB for '06 with V6, EG005-06 is for '06 with V8. The soultion is to replace the catalytic converters. But you have to decide if the problem is bad enough to have the dealer do that to the exhaust system... there's always a chance they can break something else in the process.
The original TSB, EG003-03, includes an explanation of what's causing the smell. The '06 TSB's also note that the factory has not changed to different cat's in spite of some complaints. There are now two sets of part numbers for 06 - the factory original, and the "if the customer complains" version. All that tells me is that the complaints must be few and far between, although not zero. The "low odor" version must be more expensive!
Exhaust is covered under the emissions warranty, which is 8 years / 80000 miles. You've got that long to decide if you need it!

I guess my biggest concern is the downshift clunk/thud thing. I've never heard of it called axle wrap. It feel's like a hard downshift of the tranny after I stop.

From the old 4x4 school axle wrap was something totally different.

Lub your drive shaft! I used Amsoil Racing grease, stopped the thump and never experienced it again.

So basically that's just the way it's going to be ??

Should I describe it as a drivline clunk to the dealer or what should I say ?

Lubing may not a long term fix, but if it work's for a while it's worth it.

What about if you kept taking it back in and complaining about it. After 4 time's for the same problem here in Wi. we can do lemon law. I love this truck and really would'nt do that since it's a common problem, but maybe it will get them off their ass to get us a TSB for it.

There IS a fix for the driveline clunk. However, only Lexus GX470 gets the fix for now. Lexus GX has a TSB out on the clunk. Lubbing it does NOT work over the long haul...it is a temporary fix at best.
I respectfully disagree.

Our '98 4WD 'Runner had this problem and a big dose of Valvoline synthetic NGLI-2 grease with Moly Disulfide fixed it. Toyota recommended greasing the U-joints and slip yokes at each oil change, something that it appears many don't bother to do. After I learned this, I religiously greased the u-joints and slip yokes at each oil change. We put 75K miles on the '98 and the problem never returned.

Our '03 4WD 'Runner quickly developed the "clunk" after we got it, and again, a dose of grease fixed it. I've greased it at every oil change (6K miles) and at 52K miles the problem has not come back. Again, Toyota recommends lubing the drive lines for the '03 at each oil change.

FYI, the problem is in the driveline slip yokes, which are splined couplings that are there to accommodate the small changes in driveline length that occur with rear suspension movement ("axle wrap"). If the slip yokes dry out, they will bind and store energy. When you come to a stop, they'll release the energy all at once, with a "clunk" that's as much felt as heard. Think of this as being like moving tectonic plates and earthquakes!

I view this as being purely a maintenance issue, and not any kind of a "problem". In my experience, if you follow Toyota's maintenance recommendations there will be no problem. You'll find the grease fittings at each end of both driveshafts, three per driveshaft for a total of 6. The fittings for the slip yokes are on the outside of the U-joint yoke, and typically need 4-5 pumps to fill. The fittings on the u-joint crosspins should only be greased until old grease begins to ooze past the seals, typically no more than 1-2 pumps.

I hasten to add that this solution applies only to 4WD vehicles, as 2WDs have no driveline grease fittings.

Good luck.

PS: Thai, thank you for all the time, effort and faith that you put into the creation of this forum!

Karl, i have to disagree with you. This has been debated a long time on both this forum and Clublexus.

Your exact response is what a lot people got from Lexus and Toyota dealerships. IMHO, this is unacceptable. It should not happen in a well-designed driveline. You don't see many Lexus LX or Land Cruiser owners complaining about this. This clunk is isolated to GX and 4th gen 4runner. (My 2002 4runner never had the clunk...and i never lube anything.) The fact that you do lube it every oil change does not change the fact that this is ABnormal.

If Toyota/Lexus thought that this is "normal", then why do you think that there is a TSB out for GX?? Why would Lexus invest $$ to fix this "normal" issue?? Remember, this TSB does not only fix the driveshaft but also the control arms (among other small things). So, as you can see, this was/is a design flaw from the very beginning. It is NOT a maintenance issue.

There is no doubt about it. The release of this TSB for GX says it all.

P.S.: Thanks for being on this forum.:)

I have the same problem with my 06 4runner. After braking, I feel/hear a pretty big thud from underneath the vehicle. It is definitely noticeable and quite discomforting.

I'm just wondering if the thud does any actual damage to the 4runner? It's unpleasant but I can live with it as long as it doesn't harm the car.

Thank you.

I don't believe that it does any damage. However, i would lube it to relieve/minimize the thud.

I always thought this had something to do with the rear air suspension leveling itself out since it felt a lot like the RAS in the way it jerks when it goes up & down. If it is the drivetrain, that actually worries me a lot more.

Any idea when we can expect a TSB to be issued for the 4Runner? If there is a TSB for the same problem on the Lexus, I figure it can't be long before they put one out for the Toyota.

I hope that you're right. I wonder if the new FJ Cruiser also has this problem or did Toyota already implemented the fix.

The problem seems worst if you have rear air suspension. That explains why there are more complains from GX owners than 4runner owner.

Do all of the GXs have rear air suspension? Honestly, I hope it is not isolated to only T4Rs with RAS. The more people who have the problem, the more likely it will be that a TSB will be issued.

I only have about 2500 miles on my 06 & I have been experiencing this for a while now. It is the one thing that REALLY bothers me about the truck. We need to do whatever we can to get a fire under Toyota's butt to get a TSB out there that will fix this issue.

Yes all GX have rear air suspensions. If you try to lower or raise the RAS, on some GX, the cluck problem becomes worst.
