The rattle stops when I press on the area circled in red... or really anywhere close to it.
Sure would like to find a comparable spot on my wife.

My 2011 Limited has this issue and it is very annoying. I sent it to the dealership and they padded the front passenger side door. It was good for a little while and no it is back again. I think the only way to reduce that rattle is probably by dyno-mating the doors. I hope this would help with that rattle as I am planning on having this done. Has anyone tried this already with success??

Yes. Have done it to my runner and it does work. It's not about just matting. It's matting in the right places. General inside the door matting is for overall sound deadening and improving your sounds.
For rattles, you gotta try and find the rattle and then mat to eliminate the noise. Anywhere there are those plastic clips, wiring harness, etc are a good place to start. Any high points that touch the interior plastic should be matted and also isolated with some foam insulation. You may need to Mat the inside of the plastic interior skin. Especially the wide open areas that don't have much structure. The skin itself tends to vibrate.
Good luck. Took me a couple of tries but everything is quiet now.

Thank you for the information! I will definitely try this out. Did you end up matting the whole door in the process to make it uniform throughout or just the problem areas more so than other locations or both? I will purchase some matting tomorrow and want to make sure I get enough. Thanks for your help on this!

This problem sucks. Glad I don't have it. Instead (not to hijack...) I've got a weird buzzing sound every time my auto climate control kicks on for about the first few min then it disappears. I figure it's a Toyota so I shouldn't expect Audi/BMW/etc perfect quiet while driving anyway, so I don't really care (plus my stereo is usually cranked anyway :guitar2

Was a little busy this weekend so no reply till now. I did inside the door (outer skin) completely. This one helps quiet the car, improve bass response and most of all, get rid of the tin can sound when closing the door. Did the interior side only in the wide open areas and where I thought the rattling was coming from. Also covered the big hole (the one covered with plastic) with the mat. It's not too appealing to the eye but serves it's purpose. I bought some cheaper matting recently so I plan to go back and cover more area.

Thanks for the reply back and the detailed information! One more question, what tool did you use to remove the door panel to gain access? Is it something I can pick-up from Toyota or online as I do not want to damage the interior trying to get the panel off. Thanks for your input. My guess there is a write up on how to remove the door.

My hands. No tool required although it's not a bad idea. You could just remove the 2 or 3 screws (can't remember), grab panel at bottom and give it a good pull. Worked on all doors and did each a couple of times. No issues. Watch out for the little thin washers that are on the clips. Not sure what purpose they serve but if you're the anal type, it may bother you that you lost a few.

Dropped my '13 LE off at the dealer this morning for it's 20k service and mentioned this door rattle issue. I left a note and marked the magic spot on the door panel that makes the rattle go away.
Picked it up a few hours ago and the problem was gone. Per their feedback, they installed more padding around the speaker housing and within the door panel.
Tested it by jacking the volume up to 45 and increased bass 2 notches in audio settings- didn't hear a single rattle.

Hi JayceeP I had a 2012 4Runner limited with JBL premium sound same as yours even same color bought it new. Noticed the issue right away I wanted the JBL because I can crank up the volume to 45 and even as high as 54 and no distortion. But I noted some music with certain bass tones caused the front door panels to vibrate and when I brought it to the dealer to fix they tried to fluff me off. I told them I was in collision work for 20 years and this can be fixed and I didn't accept no for an answer. They put their trouble shooting mechanic on it and he resolved the issue. I asked what he did and he said he used gorilla tape where it was vibrating and it worked for 3 years. I recently bought a 2015 4Runner limited hoping they resolved the issue and it's actually worse!!! When I'm listening to XM radio at 25-30 volume level certain songs come on and I have to bring the bass down, then back up on the next song. I'm having my truck serviced where I bought it and haven't been able to get them to fix it yet even after I called Toyota customer care, Because there's no bulletin on it Toyota won’t recognize it and the dealer don’t want to “Modify” anything without Toyota’s approval. I'm about to take the door panels off and fix it myself but it's the principle I want Toyota to fix it!!!

This suggestion may very well NOT be something you'd want, but it does work. If you add a subwoofer; even a small one, you'll be able to completely remove the bass from the doors and tailgate, and delegate it to the 'low frequency Sub-bass chamber'. This way you'll never have distortion from these 'midbass' drivers; which are not really designed to reproduce bass and when they do, they don't do the best job of it (IMHO)! http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/174196-got-bass.html ..."Hope this helps!"

So glad somebody resurrected this thread, I had posted about this very issue last week but didn't get much help.
My Limited w/JBL has done this on passenger side door only since I bought it, and it's when there's bass. Took it to the dealer and they put a new door speaker in, which fixed NOTHING.
Hate to mess up my $45k car but I might try taking that panel off and doing some insulating, we'll see.

Hi ColoT4R,
The dealership didn't spend enough time with your vehicle for proper analysis and approach. The problem is that the 'EXTREMELY' light weight, thin metallic panels and 'plastic hardware' are all in an environment (sound chamber) together where these parts are subject to soundwave empathizing e.g., forced to vibrate along with the speaker cones at certain lower frequencies. Sound damping material will improve this condition greatly as it will absorb much of the standing waves which have nowhere else to go!
There are innumerable threads here on the subject of: Door panel removal, adding sound dampening (Dynamat) panels to your cabin...etc. but if you're not comfortable doing it yourself, there's no shortage of car audio shops who specialize in this area! Hope this helps,

I had the same problem on my 15 Limited with passenger door rattle during moderate bass. Dealer replaced the speaker (distortion was never an issue) and added some dynamat which helped, but a slight rattle was still present. I just changed out Limited's (2WD to 4WD) and this one has no rattle at all???
