JBL subwoofer "stock" box

My 4Runner didn't come with the JBL package but I've been wanting to add a subwoofer to it and I really like how the "stock" JBL configuration looks in the rear trunk. I've looked on eBay for the part and they are about $280-300! I'm assuming that price includes box frame, sub and amp. I just want the box frame. Or would it be better and cheaper to have a custom box made for the rear trunk where the "stock" JBL sub box would go. And either way I would still have to make a hole for the screen for the sub.
Any suggestions or comments?

Anybody know if someone is selling a stock sub-woofer for a 2004 4Runner Limited?
My wife's sub has blown out and the amp and box are fine; I just need the stock sub. I called Toyota and they sell the entire assembly (box, amp and sub) for around $500... I really don't want to spend that much when all I need is the speaker itself.

I'm fairly new to this forum and cannot create any posts right now, otherwise I would create a post. If anybody can help me out it would be much appreciated.

Why not just replace the sub I'm sure a aftermarket sub is better than the one that jbl had in there. I'm not sure what size it is I think an 8" but a lot of companies should make that size. Kicker, alpine and others. [MENTION=136466]Shaniac1972[/MENTION]

I would but after making several phone calls to Toyota and after market companies; the aftermarket sub woofers require more power than the current amp allows which could cause damage to the system. I even contacted JBL audio (which is OEM for the 4Runner) and they told me the same thing; that the newer replacements require more power and I would have to spend more money and replace the amp as well. The other alternative is purchase the entire box (amp and sub) from Toyota and dish out $500 or purchase a new aftermarket or used box with the amp and sub and dish out $215.
So I'm trying to find someone that has an OEM JBL sub laying around as I am only trying to get my wife's system up and running for another 3 years before we upgrade her 4Runner.

Total bull what they're telling you. Doesn't matter if the sub can handle 1000 watts and your only feeding it 100. It doesn't draw power, it reproduces what it gets. As long as the impedance is the same, you have nothing to worry about.

Having said that, you have a few options. I replaced mine with a Kenwood KFC-XW800F shallow mount 8" sub.

Too much power, not enough power, excessive cone excursion, over heating can all contribute to blown subs.

29 years in a service center for a major car audio manufacture including sub woofer re-coning tells me different.

- Did my non premium sound 4Runner come prewired for the sub?

- Would I need to upgrade my basic / stock head unit to something after market, or does it come with a sub-out?

No, it did not come pre-wired for an amp and/or sub.
Yes, you would need a head unit that has amp pre-outs (at least 1).

With that being said, the head unit will make a big difference in your sound now, even with stock speakers, so that would be the first thing to do anyway.

Or should I sticker with the other aftermarket 8" Shallow speakers? Does the JBL package come with an AMP wires in? If so, what range should I be looking for with a replacement?

So I believe the factory amp is a total of 110 watts to the sub (peak I believe, not RMS), but it is using a dual voice coil (DVC) sub, so about 55 watts per voice coil and each is at 2 ohms impedance. Find yourself a good aftermarket shallow-depth sub that will match up and you should actually get much better bass out of it than the factory JBL. I'm pretty sure JLAudio makes one, and they are always quality stuff. Hope this helps!:guitar2:

You are almost open to use any speaker because the power put out by the factory amp is nothing compared to almost every aftermarket amp on the market these days. With that being said though, it is important to get a speaker that is efficient so that it will make the most of the little power it is going to get. For example, this Skar Audio (Skar Audio - VD-8 | 8" 600 Watt Max Power Subwoofer (Shallow Mount)) is a great sub that has the right specs, but it is designed to take a lot of power, so the factory amp you have may not power it very well and you won't get it's full potential.

You have some great shops in the Pensacola area, so I would just ask around and get some recommendations and go from there.

I have the factory sub that came out of my 07 limited when I redid the sound system. Id be happy to sell it to ya cheap. If you want it let me know asap cuz Im leaving for a road trip for a couple weeks to visit home town!

I went with this one: Pioneer TS-SW2002D2 8" Shallow-Mount Subwoofer.

Cut the old plugs off. The wire at the bottom of the "T" is positive, the top is negative. Strip the ends of your wires. If I remember correctly, the terminals on the back of the Pioneer are push type.

Clock it so the holes line up.
