JBL Synthesis - Replacing sub

I have a 2007 4runner sport with the JBL sound setup. I'd love to replace just the sub and not the amp. I've read dozens of posts about people upgrading their JBL system but it always involves replacing the amp too and I really don't want to go down the road of rewiring into a new amp, running wires, creating enclosure boxes, etc.

Can the stock amp handle an upgraded sub? I don't need anything to shatter windows I just want good clean sound.

What sub would you recommend using and will it fit into the same enclosure that the stock sub used?

Any other suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I think the whole issue with doing that is the stock amp doesn't put out enough power to make it worth upgrading just the sub. It might be worth you wild to go check out the audio sub-forum to see specs on what subs people are putting in their stock enclosures, the most I can tell you from memory is that JL's seem to be a popular choice.

Not worth it imo. You won't see big gains without adding power.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I wasn't sure how much power the stock amp produces but it gets loud enough for us. Maybe it's not worth upgrading as you said. The reason I'm even considering it is because I have the system exposed trying to figure out why the rear pillar tweeters are not getting sound. I hear hissing with my ear against the speaker but there is absolutely no music coming out. All other speakers including the sub work fine.

Mine too! Although there is a faint bit of music thats comes out of them, the majority of the sound is just hissing. Please keep us posted if you find a fix. I just assumed the tweeters were finished but maybe its a wiring issue.

Will do. I tested the wiring from the amp to the pillar speakers and it checks out good. This confirms what I assumed since there is hissing. Unfortunately I think this would leave the amp or deck at fault which is much more costly. I'm far from an audio expert though.

No conclusive cause as to why the speakers aren't working or why I don't have a "Surround" option with the head unit but I will continue troubleshooting and posting updates in the new thread.

No surround option on the HU? That's odd
