JBL Synthesis System Upgrade

Ok guys.. before I get yelled at I did try the forum search and I couldn't find the conclusive info I needed.

I recently bought some kicker 6x9 components for the front doors, and kicker 6.5 coaxials for the back. I've got the JBL system with the amp/sub in the rear. It seems like the AMP is ok but the sub is blown. I had an amp/cap/sub from a previous car and I wanted to throw the amp/cap in (sell the sub and get something for the enclosure instead). I also just purchased (yet to install) a Pioneer AVH-4200NEX.

All of that being said here is the advice I want to do. I want to install my amp/cap and a new sub. I want to leave the factory JBL amp to push the door (and back pillar) speakers and then use the old amp I have to push just this new sub. The new HU has a subwoofer out so I figured that would give me the most control over it all.

Will this work? Think placing this aftermarket amp under the passenger seat and then running the speaker cable to the amp/sub enclosure just for the sub, while pushing the door speakers with my factor amp. If it will, what kind of restrictions do I need to keep in mind when looking at 8' subs? Thanks :bounce::bounce:

Not sure if it makes much of a difference but the factory jbl amp is 2 ohm, i was told if replacing if i replaced speakers but kept the factory amp that i should get 2 ohm speakers

I'm going to stick an aftermarket AMP on it. Crutchfield recommended the Rockford P3SD48 P3 and said the Kicker CompRT 43CWRT81 had a mounting height of 0.800" which is more than the factory acceptable mounting height of 0.719"


Can anyone weigh in on that?

How did you speaker upgrade go? I just picked up an 08 4Runner Sport. I plan on replacing all door speakers, and putting 1 12" rockford in the back. Looking for install ideas. What size speakers did you use for the doors? Did you need extra mounts?

I haven't done it all yet. So far I replaced the 6x9s in the front door (went with component speakers) and I replaced the 6.5s in the rear doors with a coaxial speaker. I still have to replace the tweeters because I didn't realize they needed a mounting adapter (they also look like they need a special wiring harness but I'll just splice that together myself). After many chats with Crutchfield and many googles, I went with the Rockford Fosgate P3SD4-8 sub in the back, which I hope to install this weekend. Most people with with the P3SD2-8, but I didn't due to my aftermarket AMP that I already owned.

As far as adapters and all you will want... You need a pair of Metra 72-8104 Speaker Connector for each set of door speakers you install. Metra 82-8146 6" x 9" Front Speaker Adapter for mounting the front door speakers. 6.5" Aftermarket Plastic Black Speaker Adapter for the rear door. Toyota 4Runner Tweeter Mounts for any tweeters you install (which is at least two since I used components in the front door.
