JBL System Overhaul

Hey all, I'm working on overhauling the JBL system in my 2006 Limited. I've searched around a bit but never found all the info I've needed on the wiring in the JBL system. I'm hoping to find the wiring schematics so that I can utilize the factory wiring to install a new 5 channel amp and make it as plug-and-play as possible (other than running power wiring and RCA's and whatnot). Any info would be extremely helpful, and seeing as though I haven't really found a forum post that simplifies all of this info I wouldn't mind putting together a how-to guide for others too! thanks

I recently upgraded/overhauled my JBL system.

I installed:
Pioneer AVIC-4200
Rockford Fosgate P1000X5 amp
Hertz HSK165 components (front)
Hertz HCX165 coax (rear)
Rockford Fosgate P3SD48 P3 Punch Shallow mount 8-Inch DVC 4-Ohm Subwoofer
TRU SSLD6 Line Driver

For the amp install, the 70-8117 kit was pretty awesome. The RF amp was small enough to mount under the passenger seat. Unplug the harness from your oem amp mounted on the sub box, plug in the 70-8117 kit, and route the loose cables to your amp. Youll more than likely only use the standard colors (white, gray, green, and purple). I just ran a remote wire with the RCAs rather than trying to figure out which wire from the harness I could use. Id also recommend the 72-8104's. Make speaker install a breeze.

For the front tweeters I cut out a piece of ABS plastic in the shape on the oem tweeter and mounted the new tweeter to it. Takes a few minutes, but its the right way to do it.

All in all, the system went from meh to bonkers. I can listen to it loud and clear with the windows down, which is what I was looking for. The sub is pretty awesome, just keep in mind its only and 8", so you wont feel the bass, just hear it.

Did you build a custom box, or mount the RF sub in the stock box? That's one thing I think I'll have to have someone else do, I'd like to have a box made for my 10.
I had found the Metra 70-8117, but I was confused on where it plugs in. Does it plug into the harness near the factory amp? That would make more sense now that I'm thinking about it, but the fact that its so long kinda threw me off. Yesterday was the first time I had actually had the back of the truck apart to see what was going on wiring-wise, and from looking at it it looks like I could just use the majority of the factory harness to wire in the new amp.
So far as speakers, I'm basically just bringing over the stereo I had in my Outback: Rockford Fosgate P165-SI's, P1650's for the rear doors, and a P3D2-10 for the bass. I just need to find a decent 5 channel amp, I was running two amps in my Subaru and I think the one for my sub's RCA's are toast.
I already picked up a set of speaker spacers for the front and rear doors from TacoTunes. They were a good bit more expensive than the ones that you linked, but I'm pretty confident in the quality of their PVC spacers plus I got wiring harnesses too.
Do you have any pics of your install? It sounds quite a bit like what I'm looking to do!

Yes, the Metra does connect to the harness by the factory amp. I ran mine along the passenger side rear wheel well, under the doorstep trim pieces, under the front passenger seat, up through the center console, and down the center console up to the stereo. When you've got that done you'll have wires to all of the speakers available at the stereo area. If I remember correctly I did cut the sub wires shorter and just ran them to my separate amp underneath the front passenger seat. If you plan on using the 5-channel amp for all of the speakers and install it right by the sub you wouldn't have to run the metra harness so far.

Right on, I appreciate the insight since I didn't want to spend $50 on something that I wasn't even sure how I'd use lol. Do you have steering wheel controls? I'd like to retain those and my reverse camera when I replace the deck, but the only time I've used the Metra Axxess ASWC-1 was in a new Focus and it was such a huge pain in the butt that I don't think we ever even ended up getting it to work properly.

I did not get the steering control harness. I put the stereo in about a week after I purchased the car, so I didn't get too addicted to the controls just yet (previous car was from 1996). It was a close call. :fear:

I did look into it (the stereo I had doesn't support controls period) and saw that apparently for some aftermarket stereos some of the buttons were inverted, which made me lose further interest.

I used the factory box, the RF sub fit in it nicely with zero trimming. I have no pics of the install, sorry!

As far as the steering wheel controls, the ASWC is a universal one which explains why you had problems. Get a unit specifically meant for the head unit (like a PAC SWI-RC) . Or...you can get the Maestro RR unit, its a wiring harness and steering wheel controls all in one, not to mention you can check your vehicles parameters directly on your head unit.

I've seen a few people mount their 8 in the factory box like that, thats awesome to me that it fits without any modification. I bet it sounds a million times better too!
I'll definitely check out the PAC unit, I'm not sure the Sony head unit I'm looking at supports all the stuff the Maestro has to offer.
