Jeep Special Edition - Call of Duty

I have no idea, but my question is; why would anyone buy that over a 4 runner?

I love jeeps, but would never own a new one.

I own a wrangler and a 4Runner. Each has their advantages. Harder Off-roading advantage easily goes to the Wrangler. As far as other newer jeeps (not the wrangler), maybe not so much.

I usually dont chime in on this type of conversation, but i will lol. I was never a gamer, until one day in 2007 when a girl friend and I called it quits. I went to a buddies and saw COD 4, ever since then I have been hooked. I play nothing but.

That being said. MW3 sold $1 billion dollars in games in the first 16 days of sales. That is alot of video games.

I was actually at a fundraiser event recently "sporting clays shoot" I was speaking with some CEO's and CFO's of 2 very successful businesses. They play Call of Duty and we ended up talking for awhile about it.

If you dont play or have never played, don't try it, or you will get hooked.

If it sells, who cares? The Jeep's marketing is way better than say Hyundai's new scheme with rats and white ghetto wanna-be-gangsters free styling while going to buy Christmas gifts.

While I agree, I also disagree. Jeep owners continue to buy Jeeps, and certainly do not normally look to a 4Runner at the same time as looking for a Wrangler. It is not even close to the same type of vehicle.

I agree, I forgot about the jeep fans out there, some people like them because they are just pure fans of them, I use to be that way about f-series trucks, would not even consider anything else.

I like jeeps, just old ones, I use to have a 1971, should have kept the darn thing!

Yep. Jeep Wranglers/ CJs are one of those iconic vehicles that really don't compare to anything else. They're apples/ oranges compared to a 4runner. I had a YJ and loved it. I've never met anyone who owned a Jeep that doesn't get that dreamy look in their eye when they talk about it. People love their Jeeps and you really won't understand unless you've had one.

I've never owned a Jeep and don't really want to, I have no issues with them or the people that drive them I just don't like Chrysler, but whatever thats not my argument. It's not only Jeep owners that get the dreamy look, I meet a guy who was like that when I asked him about his vintage Volkswagen Beatle, hell I get like that when I talk about my 4runner. Everytime I see my runner I get alittle grin on my face, it just makes me happy to near it. So bottome line is it's just a matter of being passionate and thats based on the person not the vehicle.

I saw the commercial and thought it was interesting but I would hands down take a FJ Cruiser TT Special Edition before I would get any Wrangler. The Toyota 4.0 L V6 is already proven to be very reliable while the 3.6 Pentastar is already proving to be full of issues. And it seems like they're tuning their engines to have more Horspower than Torque as if for a car. To me, this basically just proves that Chrysler is just dressing up their vehicles, including specs, to sell. I would definitely take my 320 ft-lb torque over their 280-something horsepower engine.

It's a Jeep thing, unless you have had you just can't understand. The Jeep thing really only applies to their SWB vehicles (cj, wranglers) maybe some older larger vehicles.

I had an 01 Grand as well as my wrangler. I could take or leave the grand but not my wrangler.

I like my 4Runner much better than my grand. My 4Runner is great for towing my trailer, hauling the family, getting groceries, going picnics, etc. But so are many other SUVs. Toyota has great reputation for reliability and quality that probably can't be beat, which is what makes it special. The wrangler is special because it is much more unique.

The lockers front and rear are nice....that's about all the nice I have to say about it. The real shocker is the price---$40,000 MSRP!!! So, look for them at the Jeep dealers for $50,000... :barf:

There is more to it than just lockers...there are the sway bar discos, BFG MTs, 4:1 low range transfer case, heavier duty suspension, etc....and we're just talking about the Rubicon model.

A regular Rubicon Unlimited runs around $34-36k. The COD version has winch-ready bumpers front and rear, rock sliders, different hood design with scoop, aftermarket-type rims, unique interior fabric and stitching, etc.. Is all this worth $4-5k? Maybe. How much are the aftermarket bumpers on a 4runner (front and back)? How much are the sliders?? Please include labor costs to install these too. 4runner owners use to salivate over the scoop hoods on 4runner Sport Editions. How much for those? You do the math. $4k is not horrendous.

Personally, i would GLADLY take a COD Wrangler. Although the old folks will say...Jeeps are built, not bought...i will gladly flick my middle finger and roll pass them in my bought COD Wrangler!! As been proven in the past, Wrangler Rubicon gears are not pesky cheap parts...they are the REAL stuff, easily on par with the best that the aftermarket has to offer. Those bumpers and sliders on the COD are pretty damn nice.

How much are the 4runner Trail Edition with KDSS costs these days?? A COD Wrangler (or a lowly Rubicon) will walk all over the 4runner Trail off-road...stock vs. stock. How much mods and $$$$ do you have to put into a 4Runner Trail to match the Wrangler Rubicon/COD?? Much more than what the COD/Rubicon costs!! (And yes, i realize that 4runner Trail is a much better on-road vehicle than the Wrangler.)

And no, i don't have time for those video games...but i find the COD Wrangler to be damn cool in my book!!

I think it's pretty cool. They've already made a Tomb raider, a Jurassic Park, and a Sahara Movie Edition in the past. Wranglers are basically big toys anyway, so why not. It's all in fun.

x2.

wow, that's a very ignorant view of people just based on the fact that they play video games. Actually most gamers are well into adulthood and many gamers are over 40 (started with the Atari kids in the early '80s and they just haven't stopped playing) and have jobs that pay quite well and are playing these games on PCs that cost a few grand so most gamers are a big target for big money items including the goofy stuff like themed vehicles.

I don't know...i don't know what the FJ offers that the Wrangler does not. FJ Cruiser is mighty fine...but, as a family SUV, it sucks with the claustrophobic rear seats. It is no better of a family SUV than a Wrangler Unlimited. Crash test in the FJ is a bit better...but that's about it. Off-road, it is not even close...stock vs. stock. And how much money do you have to put into the FJ to compete against a COD Wrangler?? Probably close or more than $38-40k!

You may know more than me...but what issues?? I am sure that there are teething issues with any new engine. The 4.0L V6 in the FJ/4runner was not without them either!! Even the mighty iForce V8 has issues (e.g. exhaust manifolds).

The 3.6 is a good enough engine. Who cares if it emphasizes HP over Torque...the COD Wrangler has a 4:1 transfer case. And at 4000 lbs, the engine is good enough for the Wrangler to get out of its own way. 0-60 is pretty good i think. Off-road, torque to the ground is a ton more than anything the FJ can put down. And yeah, even with a V8, once in 4-LO, the COD Wrangler puts out more torque than your 4runner...effectively to the ground.

Found a couple things, probably could find more if i took the time. As far as I know, the I-Force V8 has proved bulletproof an a cracked manifold, yes its bad, but you can get away with not having it fixed for a while. I do not recall any I-Force V8 engine failures either. And yes, I am aware of the couple cases of the 4.0 L V6 failures but these have already had a lot of miles put onto them, while the examples I just provided are brand new engines!

Search "fuel rail issues"...it resulted in a recall and Consumer Reports slamming 4runner for this. This was early...so, no, this was not an issue after a lot of miles.

And the exhaust manifold issue is around $1000 per side, isn't it? At least, that was what was quoted to my brother with his Lexus LX470.

I really like the idea of a Jeep Wrangler, I just wished it was made by Toyota. I think it would be great to have the option for SFA with locking diffs front and rear. I know the ride quality would suffer a little bit but I'm sure Toyota would make it great.

None of these are Wranglers, even if they have the “same " motor you don't see those issues with the wrangler.

Sorry but a 4Runner (other than earlier ones) is not a great choice if you are looking for an off-road vehicle.

I have a straight six 4.0 in my jeep and the V-6 4.0 in my 4Runner. The Toyota motor is sooo much better for most things.

The good thing about the jeep 4.0 is it brings on the power and torque at low rpms. How the motor will bring the power is very predictable. Gearing is really the issue for the off-roading I do. I am only going a couple miles an hour over rough obstacles. I don't need a poop load of HP to do that.
The new Jeep V-6, even if it ran perfect, probably wasn’t the best choice that could have been made. It lacks power and there is no reason it should get the crappy gas mileage it gets.

If I were building a high speed desert runner the Toyota 4 runners would be a better option than a wrangler.

Just like a tool, it depends on what you are using it for. You can have the best screw driver in the world but a crappy hammer will still drive a nail better.

The 4Runner (other than older ones) can't do this:

i went on an off road trip a couple months ago with a lifted Cherokee and a stock wrangler, I too was and am stock. I got through much easier than the wrangler did, and my 4th gen had better stock clearance and underbody coverage than he did. Also, his weak 4 cyl gets about 12 mpg while my V8 gets 17 mpg. Also, the 4Runner, every generation, is arguably the most capable mid-sized SUV. The 4Runner and Wrangler are in two different classes and a 4Runner kicks @ss on the trails and on the road. The FJ is in the class with the Wrangler, and yes, I would take an FJ over a Wrangler. I honestly would rather get an FJ over a Wrangler even if I had to do a SAS. Wranglers are cool for off roading but I would never get one. Everyone I know with Jeeps have tons of problems, spend so much money on them and they're in the shop for numerous problems.

One thing jumps to mind when i read what you wrote.........your friend is a horrible driver!! 4-cyl or not, a Wrangler is more capable off-road than 4runner over most (if not all) off-road terrain...with maybe the exception being washboards.

You mean that your 4runner at 8.3" REAL/TRUE ground clearance has better clearance than a Wrangler?!! (And BTW, Toyota specs are WRONG when it comes to ground clearance.) Approach and departure angles too? That's news to me! :D I think that you better read up on the Wrangler specs...and learn to appreciate other SUVs.

Another capable midsize SUV that deserves some consideration: Hummer H3 Alpha and Nissan Xterra Off-road.

This!!!

I have both a wrangler and a 4Runner. The 4Runner is a great vehicle but no much of an off-road machine. If you go dollar for dollar and are looking for a off-road machine the wrangler is a clear winner over both the 4Runner or FJ. The old FJs and 4Runners can be incredible.

It was a mud trail, my traction control got me through like nothing. He had some trouble getting through. I believe it was a 1998 wrangler. All I left with were a few pinstripes and a dent on the front skid plate. He broke something, don't remember what it was, nothing serious it was something off the rear bumper I think. And I do appreciate other SUVs, I'm just saying from what I've seen, heard, and read, the
4Runner is more capable than the H3 and xterra.

Either you are a good driver or your friend suck at offloading. Your 4runner clearances are far far inferior to a Wrangler. Not even close.

H3 alpha is quite a vehicle offroad...doubt that a stock 4th gen non-TE can keep up with one off the beaten path.
