John's 99 4runner rebuild/build

Well I finally got my shock mounts and brake hose tabs done. I modified and used the stock brake hose tabs from the IFS. The shock towers are the $15.00 ford towers and the lower mount is 5/8" stainless round drilled and tapped for a M10x1.25 bolt.

Instead of having a long hose hanging down I ran my brake hose along to lower link. Do you think that could be a problem?

Here is my version of a 3" panhard drop bracket. I used 1/8" plate, boxed in on three sides. Maybe this will last till I get the Cruiser rear end installed.

Now I need to add 2" to the bracket on the axle to get the panhard level.

After being in our new to us house for the past 7 months I finaly got my garage built to the point I can use it, have'nt got the power run yet but its coming.

I welded the rear end in temporarily so I could move it from my father-in-law's garage. Here's a few pics. Now I got to figure out how to get the upper link in.

I took the Cruiser rear end back out and cleaned the frame rails and the rear end up so the install can begin. I will be using the LC factory upper and lower links until I can get the permanent ones made.

Got the lower link mounts welded out, gotta do some grinding.

It looks like I am going to have to put in a brace from the frame to the crossmember that the muffler is hanging from and put the upper link mount there. Not much room under there. This will require a change in the exhaust system.

The bolt patterns on the drive shaft and differential don't match, and neither do the LC coil perches and the 4Runner coil buckets (different centerlines).

Got the upper link mount in but I don't really like it, just looks out of place under there. I used the factory link mount off of the LC axle for the upper mount, I think it needs some bracing.

Here are the upper and lower links in temporarily.

Now I will have to get really creative with the exhaust, anyone have any ideas with pics.

Now it's time for the panhard bar.

Just a little comparison, 3rd gen 4runner upper link on top and an 80 series Land Cruiser upper link on bottom.

Finally made a little progress today.

Used some 1/4" plate to make coil buckets for my 2nd gen 4runner MOOG cargo coils. Still gotta go back and weld them out and tie them into the stock coil buckets.

Put a 3" offset in the panhard and now I have got to cut it to the proper length.

Going to fab a new bracket out of 2-1/2"x2-1/2"x1/4" wall square tubing to weld to the frame and stock bracket.

A little more progress. After I make sure the axle is still centered up with the frame rails I will cut the short side of the panhard and weld it together using an 8" long 1/4" wall piece of tubing I made from some solid round stock.

The bracket looks a little long to me, wish I had measured the stock bracket. Hope I can tie all of this together and it not look like crap.

Started on my front bumper, not too crazy about the square tubing but that's what I got for now. Started with a 32" wide Budbuilt winch plate. Still needs some more gussets and tubing. Thoughts and comments welcome.

Here is the finished product. I have since pulled it off and finished painting. I used 1" tubing for the turn signal guards.

Started the transmission swap hope it doesn't take forever like everything else has. I am putting an A343F from a 97 Land Cruiser in place of the A340E. If I am successful I will be 4wd at last.

Empty tunnel.

Side by side comparison.

The oil cooler lines are routed over to the drivers side using 12 mm tubing instead of 10mm. Going to take the fittings out of the 2wd tranny and put them in the LC tranny and use my existing 10 mm hard lines.

The transfer case has its own wiring harness so that means I just need to get a pin out of the connector and build my controls to match.

Other observations,
* Swap kick down cables, LC tranny 's is not long enough.
* Looks like the park/neutral switch has the same connector and is in the same location.
* Same for the solenoid valve connector.
* The speed sensor is in a slightly different location but appears to use the same connector.
* The main shifter linkage is on the passenger side, looks like I will have to modify my shifter to come down on the passenger side as well.
* The 1FZ bellhousing on the LC tranny is about 40mm longer than the 5VZ bellhousing. I think this means that I will have to swap out the front pump, torque converter and I don't know what else.

Here are the overdrive assemblies, the one on the left is the 4runner and the other is the LC,

Well if nothing else we know it will all bolt together, the real test will come soon I hope. I forgot to take pictures of putting the oil pump in, dammit it sucks getting old.

Just to clarify, I did have to swap the oil pump and the overdrive assembly because the LC shafts were longer than the 4runner shafts.
