Has anyone camped at yellow post campsites in Joshua tree? If so can you point me in the right direction.

North end off the 62. I'll have to look up exact details, but basically you make a left onto a dirt road before hitting ranger tower. There are multiple dispersed camping areas up the road a bit. Leads towards Jericho Rd. I can get you actual details tomorrow.
This was one of the bigger areas we took over last March, but there are a ton of smaller areas spread out all over the place. Each one is pretty well distanced from the next.

Pretty easy to find once you hit the dirt road. There's some fun wheeling back there too and all the sites are pretty well spread out or divided by the boulder piles. Didn't see a single ranger for almost 3 days, and we were there on a busier spring break weekend. We honestly couldn't see or hear any of the other camp sites and there were a couple big groups partying just as much as we were.

We'll be likely planning another group Joshua Tree meet in March on TW. That particular run we had a chili cookoff, pot luck, tritip, broken trucks, light off roading, some exploring. This year I'm not organizing anything other than the actual days, group list, and food. Trails and/or park exploration will be up to individuals or groups. All in All we had something like 20 rigs (group from Northern California came down but were at a different camp site) and tons of fun. We're planning another chili cookoff that hopefully more people will join in on and I'll try to work out some prizes for the winners.
Including this little visitor that was hanging out to the side where the truck with the roof top tent was parked, hahah.

Haven't even gotten to the point of planning for JT yet so not sure. I have a Death Valley trip and potential Mojave Road trip to plan before JT gets planned. Likely early March though, shortly after the time change. That always seems to be the best weather in all the years I've been going. How old are the kids? I bring my 7 year old son just about everywhere, except the occasional day trip that I get my mom to watch him.

Oh nice, my boy is 4 so he's just about that fun age ... My girl is only 2, so thats still tough.
When are you going to Death Valley? I'm trying to tag along with a trip on Expedition portal, they are limiting it to only 10 trucks though ...

Thanksgiving Week. Right now we're planning Mon-Fri with Monday and Friday being initial travel (Mon travel/explore, Friday head home) days, Tues/Weds being exploration, and Thursday (thanksgiving) being a relax day with food aplenty including a deep fried turkey. I'm also limiting to 10 rigs, but right now I'm at 7 mostly confirmed trucks. Doing some route and sight seeing planning on the 8th so should have more details soon.

We are actually planning a backpacking type trip but I would love to go wheeling I the JT area. I am pretty busy till the end of the year but plan out a trip and I'll try my best to be able to make it out there.

how do these sites work? first come first serve, i imagine, but do you need permits to be out there?
do you know of any other areas near JTNP with campsites that are 4WD-accessible?

These are first come first serve, they're all RIGHT outside the park, but within the boundaries. Good thing is that most people don't know about them and the tourists coming to the park are typically looking into the established campgrounds within the park. I mean we rarely saw another vehicle drive by even though most of the sites were filled. There are also more than just those 6, these were just the ones we were looking at as potential nearby sites to keep our group within walking/CB/HAM radio distance.
I believe there are some 4wd/high clearance required camp sites if you want to explore the old dale mining district and road, but I have no idea where those ones are. [MENTION=117408]Oneluv13T4R[/MENTION] would likely know though.

I'm stoked to see some other dads with young kids on here. One of the reasons we bought the 4Runner was to do more camping with our boys (4 and 7 y.o.) away from the crowded SoCal campgrounds. We've only had the rig a few months, but during that time I've skipped some overnight and day trips with various groups due to my reluctance to bring younger kids along. It would be great to organize a trip that is truly "family friendly."

Honestly man, I haven't had a single issue camping with any of these guys across T4R or TW, with or without other kids being around. Everyone has been really tolerant and even helpful with my son (I'm a single dad), and sure there's going to be some language but otherwise it's always been family friendly. Obviously having other kids to keep each other occupied allows for more adult relaxation though.

That's the reason I decided on a 4Runner too. I was riding motorcycles before but once I had my daughter, I decided I need a more family oriented hobby. At least until my daughter and future children are old enough for dirt bikes.

Same here to a degree. My hobby at the time was sportbikes. I was in an accident which put me out of commission for awhile, and I won full custody of my son at the same time, so I decided to take my insurance money and start the 4runner build. I wanted it to be something that I could do with my son, and he LOVES off roading. Still gets car sick on rough roads at high speeds, but when it comes to the challenges he can't get enough of the crazy hill climbs or downhills.

I did the same thing. I only have 1 little guy who is 3 and he loves it. The first time I did a run was last weekend and he had fun before he fell asleep. My kid is crazy and I have been reluctant too, but if he isnt exposed he will never know and want to bury his head in electronics than the outdoors.
