Just another build....

So just grabbed a new to me 06 4runner sr5.

Mod - Buy the damn things.

I am beyond happy with the deal I got. Scored a v6 with cloth (which is what I wanted) and had to make a really hard choice between this or a 4 door wrangler. Different worlds, but I am mail in the overland world so I am happy with my choice. It does have a few minor issues here and there, but it's cosmetic and really just bothers me because I get picky.

Question #1 - to wing or not to wing. The tailgate has a few tiny rust spots. Enough that I am just going to find a local yard here in Denver who has a rear tailgate and just do a swap out. Seems the easiest. Mine didn't come with a wing. I like the look better without it. Any advantage?

Question #2 - Adding remote start to the factory alarm buttons. THere is a Car Toys right down the street from me. They are normally over priced and I use them to more window shop, but they quoted me $480 to add just remote start to the 4runner. Damn, is is really that much or are they just way off?

Have big plans to come, but a clean and to the point build.

Let the games begin...

To answer question 1 I also have no rear wing and I like the look better too. It's just more unique and since most 4th gens have the spoiler I like not having it. There isn't any advantages of it being there it's just for looks more than anything. It's not like we're driving race cars and it's an aero dynamic thing causing downforce etc. Just pure looks and preference.

So, a little update after a few weeks of driving...

I love this thing. A few issues that drive me nuts, but did you know you can fit two whiskey barrels in the cargo area ha! Joys of working at a brewery.

So the good. I love the way it drives, the sound system etc etc. It's a step up from the 97 cruiser and I couldn't be happier at all. Still more to learn about it.

The bad. The brake have a pulse or such (hard to explain) when I slow. I will have to look into this, just does not feel right. And the other complaint, I wish the window switch and the unlock button were lighted. I love the location, but I have found myself trying to fumble getting the right switch. And I love the aux hook up, but no way to power the drives me crazy. Might add a USB port?

Mods Planned:

Full length rack (being built now)
4x4inovation sliders
CBI front and rear bumpers
FJ Lift
Lockers
USB Port

ANy advice is great and I will update as I go. Just had to say the 4runner really puts a smile on my face.

I have a 12v plug that I plug my iPhone brick into right next to the aux plug in the center console? Also next to the shifter there should be like a 12v car charger lighter thing inside the flip up cubbie thing

IMO, the "wing" is purely cosmetic and I personally think the Gen4's look much better without them. That, cloth seats and no xreas suspension are pretty much the main reasons I bought a standard SR5 instead of a Sport model.

I obviously vote no wing :biggrin2:

Check your calipers or rotors. Worn rotors cause the intermittent braking feel. These runners have a history of seized calipers so i'd check those out.

GL!

Pictures to come! Looks like any silver 4runner that needs to be washed!

Dropped it off for a full inspection by a good shop here (I know I should have done that first but the deal was to good to pass up). Every thing is in GREAT shape minus three items. CV's need to be replaced Not urgent, but need to be done. Valve Cover Seal. And oil pan seal. Should be to hard right?

Cv's are fairly straightforward, I would think the valve cover seal too, I'm not sure about the oil pan. Definitely do the cv yourself though

Some say the wing helps keep the rear window clean much longer than without it.

For the remote starter, save your money and have a nice Viper or other DEI remote starter installed. You can even do it yourself and save quite a few bucks. You'll get significantly better range and the ability to control many other features. And the remote is about the same size as stock.

Get a new head unit. You'll thank me later. You can get all the latest technology, including multiple USB ports, for about $125-$150 if you stay single DIN. Most car audio stores throw in the adapter cables and mounting kits including a pocket. If you don't need NAV then single DIN is the way to go.

My .02 ...

Congrats on the truck. I'm also a Land Cruiser convert, and while I still love cruisers, the 4runner is just nicer and more fun to drive albeit slightly less luxurious.

I picked up a nice set of pads and rotors off ebay. Mine were pretty warped from stock. Just be careful ordering them, they have different sizes of front rotors. I accidentally got the big ones and had to do a conversion by getting new calipers too. Drilled and slotted rotors and ceramic pads. They do seem to be quite an upgrade and here in the Colorado mountains its nice to have them. I personally feel the wing does keep some dust off the back window but its really minimal, the no-wing look always looked like something was missing IMO. Let me know if you have any questions or need any help, I'm just north of ya, and congrats!

For the record, I love the spoiler. Yeah, it probably serves little to no purpose but mine had it when I purchased it from the dealer so I suppose that I am used to it. To me, it just looks naked without it. As far as the remote start, the wife had it on her GMC Acadia (biggest hunk of crap we have EVER OWNED) and the remote start was not much help. I guess it boils down to personal choice.

Here is what the service guys told me. Things look really good minus the gaskets (which I plan to do at the oil change which they will do due to time. Cv's I will read up and do my own so I know

Side note, live the cargo space. A whisky barrel and a bike! Thank god for the window since I have a barrier up in the back.
