Poisons bad - traps okay
This is a very bad idea. Any time you put rat poison inside an enclosed space there's a big chance that one or more of them will die inside. They can die where you can't see them or get to them, either in your house or in a car. And it's going to smell like rotten meat pretty quickly. The smell won't go away quickly though. It will linger for weeks if you can't find it and clean out the rancid mess.
The guy who put rat poison under his deck where the dogs can't reach it is risking his dogs health, as someone pointed out already. Secondary poisoning is common. Around here in So Cal people who use poison around rural areas often wind up killing wild cougars, eagles, hawks, condors, cats, dogs and other animals of prey.
The sticky trap may be the best idea. Check them every day.
With spring traps you have to know whether its mice or rats. There are ways to tell from the droppings but not everyone knows how to tell the difference. If you try to catch a mouse with a rat trap they often get injured but not caught and die later. Traps are good outside and in the garage if you know what the critters are.
Don't use poisons. Secondary poisoning is bad for wild animals and pets. And never use poisons inside unless you're ready to move out for a few weeks.
