I've been toying with the idea of getting a new DD that could tow my 96 as it just doesn't have the right road characteristics and gas mileage, so naturally, I was considering the V8 4th gens as I know they have plenty of power. There of course was other options out there, however for the price range I was looking for I knew a 4Runner would be a great choice as I have experience with them and I know they are tired and true.
So, I decided to bite the bullet yesterday and purchase this silver 2006 SR5 V8 with 148k on it. I got it for $7,500 plus TTF, which is cheap for these. Main reason being is it has some Taco 16" wheels on it as the PO used to have some aftermarket tires/wheels on it (I know him) and the current wheels don't have any TPMS sensors. Not a huge deal for me though as I never had it anyways on the 96 I still have.
The exterior is pretty clean considering the age, minus one spot on the corner of the rear bumper where there used to be a dent and someone banged it out so some paint damage is there. The interior is pretty nice, however the stock head unit is just sitting in the dash as the PO used to have an aftermarket unit in there and I guess didn't keep the radio tray to mount it. It runs amazing and I love the extra power from the V8. Didn't get THAT in the 96 lol. Handles so much better too, even with the 2" spacer lift it has on it. Timing belt/water pump was done at 97k 4 years ago and the secondary air pump was done at ~70k ish. I've heard about what a headache that system can be. Besides the TMPS codes, there's nothing coming up in Techstream.
Besides the usual maintenance such as brake/power steering flush and gear oil, it does have a seeping transmission pan and the power steering reservoir to pump hose is leaking a little. When I do the tranny pan reseal, I'll just do a flush while I'm at it. It was done about 20k ago and it shifts good right now. It will need spark plugs as I'm pretty certain they are original and won't hurt to clean the MAF and throttle body as well.
One thing it does not have that I would like to enable is the DRL. I heard it's just as simple as swapping out a flasher relay behind the fuse box. If anyone has the DRL relay, let me know!
