Just Brake Pads?..Rotors?...So Confused

Rotors should be checked for remaining surface thickness and for warping with a dial indicator. Most rotors are stamped with a min thickness value beyond which they are not supposed to be turned. Also this is a good time to inspect and repack wheel bearings, races and inner seals.

Min is 1mm. Tell them to stuff the brake job until the pads are at 2-3mm.
I bet the rears are like new.

Other than that...ask for them to at least whisper in your ear "I love you baby" while they bend you over.

Funny you should say that...

Rockland Toyota, who told me they were at 3, must have blind mechanics...

The Service Manager walked and said they were still at .5...and I didn't need brakes yet...hows that for honesty?...:surfer:

but thanks again everyone for their insight...it's always appreciated, and what this place just ROCK!

weird that the guy who inspected mine said the rears were worse then the fronts!!!! the grinding noise from the front was insane

I'm glad you started this thread Pat. I love reading these, it's a learning experience for me. Unlike Stiffy, I'm like you, I can't/won't change brakes with my eyes shut.

Does anyone know the part numbers for the EBC pads on a 2011 4runner trail? I tried to look it up on their chart but can't find the right numbers... any help would be appreciated. Stoptech pads numbers are welcomed too! thanks guys!

Whats up! I used the EBC yellowstuff pads...front and rear....they are awesome so far....I found them on Amazon warehouse deals for like 46 bucks a set!!!! cant beat that!!!! were new in box!!!!! the part numbers were DP41657R for the fronts and DP4993R for the rear!

Bringing an old thread back to live. At 45k miles and my firestone shop that i get stuff done at says that i need front and back and quoted me $350 for everything, not including resurfacing rooters i dont think

Good/bad deal?

Reason I took it in was to get it checked out for making a squeaking noise as the tires were turning, under 40 miles an hour. That went away but now i got that bit of info.

As Stifler suggested, changing brake pads for disc brakes is one of the easiest jobs you can do on your vehicle. I would never pay someone to just change the brake pads, but I would do it myself (and have many times) if the rotors looked good.

If I didn't feel comfortable doing it myself and I was already having to pay a little more to have the pads installed, I would have new rotors installed. Yes, I would have new rotors installed. Many vehicles over many years, it seems to me that rotors that have been turned tend to warp far easier. I have not priced new rotors for the 4Runner, so this may not be a true statement, but generally new rotors are not so expensive that its worth it to have rotors turned only to have the work redone in 1/2 the time (because the turned rotors warped).

Just my opinion....

what does everything include?

thats ridiculous....unless they are changing the rotors too. then, maybe not too bad. i havent priced out the parts.

Do you tow a lot? Drive a lot in mountainous areas? If not, I would suggest you take it to another shop and get another opinion. I think it would be somewhat unusual for the brakes to need replacing after 45k miles.

I agree, except 'm not the main driver of the truck.
My wife is ... nough said?

I called Toyota and got them to change it for $350 .. So i feel better about that price point, being Toyota and all.

Oh well, you eat shit, pay taxes and pay for maintenance on an AWESOME TRUCK!!!

When the time comes for me, I think I'll do another How-To (like the Oil Change thread) for changing the brake pads/rotors . You will be shocked at how easy it really is. Honestly, the hardest part is jacking up the truck and taking the tires off, IMO!

It may be a while though, at 47,000 miles mine are still in great shape- despite all the towing I do! Gotta love this truck.

$350 seems really fair from the stealership!

I'm at almost 79k...so I think I'm going to get them done before the Cove/Vermont trips in Oct.

Fair if needed. Living in SoCal I could definitely see needing new pads in 50k worth of driving. DannyLlama , I don't suppose you had the old pads returned to you? Do you have a list of what was performed besides new pads? Did they change the fluid? Give you specs on the rotors? New springs and shims?

That would be great! I've done pads and shoes but never rotors. Do you do wheel bearings at the same time? It's been awhile

Here's a thought, why don't you make a how-to using Pat's truck when you guys have your next pajama party? :bigok:

On this 4runner, I think the front rotors might be a bit of a pain because they don't seem to have flexible brake hoses at the calipers so you might need to disconnect the hardline to get the caliper out of the way. Other than that, the rotor should be simple to remove once the caliper is off since I think we have a rotor over hub design, so everything should be easy peasy. Bearings don't need to be touched unless you have a hub over rotor design.

under the influence obviously....lol
