Just Brake Pads?..Rotors?...So Confused

Do you tow a lot? Drive a lot in mountainous areas? If not, I would suggest you take it to another shop and get another opinion. I think it would be somewhat unusual for the brakes to need replacing after 45k miles.

David

Wish my brakes lasted that long!! I only tow a few times a year and its mostly flat around here but, I have new pads and rotors on all four corners with only 42km, that's 27,000 miles!! Toyota replaces the rotors under warranty because the were warped beyond spec.
I relize this truck is 600lbs heaver than my 4th gen, but that went to 200k (125,000 miles) with only a front pad change.

$300 just to replace front pads is ridiculous. I imagine a lot of that price is in the Toyota OEM pads. If your 4R is driving okay--and you say it is--I recommend leaving your brakes alone until you start to hear the wear indicators screeching. You may be able to make 100K before you have to replace them. Depends on your driving habits. If you don't want to do that, I recommend you look for a non-dealer repair shop to do the job.

Maybe...

Safety before anything in my opinion.

I'm happy with the results.

I tow literally almost every week and my brakes look almost new at well over 40,000 miles... 27,000 miles sucks!

I look at $300 as getting a brake job for 1/2 of what most people end up paying. I cringe when co-workers take in a car for a simple pad replacement and maybe a fill n flush and come out with 4 new rotors and a caliper or 2. $600-$1000.

27k? Do you drive with 2 feet like a rally driver?

Not since my 3rd gen with a hand brake :lookout: ...Wife's dad two foots, drives me crazy!!
Do a fair bit of stop and go, and there are alot of stop signs around here. Worn out pads, maybe,, but warped rotors, that's not right!!

I don't tow and my brakes are starting to squeal (usually only when it's cold) and I only have about 27k miles too.

Surprise Toyota replaced the rotors under warranty considering brakes are wear and tear item. Dealer is charging over $100 just for an inspection so I might just take it to a independent mechanic.

Brakes squealling at 27k is just ridiculous.

On this 4runner, I think the front rotors might be a bit of a pain because they don't seem to have flexible brake hoses at the calipers so you might need to disconnect the hardline to get the caliper out of the way.

don't you just unbolt the hard line where it attaches to the flex line?

Brake pad replacement rears gone first ????

Got 51,000 KM (31,000 Miles) and my rear brake pads are gone and my fronts have 40-50% left , Is this not strange as the way these things nose dive when braking I thought the fronts were doing all the work and the rears were doing nothing .
I rotate tires every 5 K and take pins out of front and rear and clean and lube with silicone lube every time .
Just replaced rear pads with factory set $130 bux for just the rears ouch !!!!!!

I merged your brake thread with one of several existing bake threads.

You paid $130 for a set of OEM rear pads?! I know that's probably CAD, but dang. I purchased OEM front and rear pads AND front rotors for around $200.

I just did my fronts, I got good pads. they were $130 list price.

brakes are pretty important, and they will last me around 10 years. I don't understand why people always want to go cheap on brakes.

Front pads are generally designed to do most of the work because they can and because it's safer. The front wheels almost always have more weight (engine, plus forward momentum), so more friction force is available. So more force is applied to the front brakes. If equal force were applied to all brakes your rears could lock up because there is less friction available between the rear tires and the road.

That said, it sounds like something is wrong with your rear brakes. Maybe you got a bad set of pads, but more likely something is off with the system and it's using them too much. Or possibly they got stuck at some point and you drive with them rubbing.

As far as nose dive, that has nothing do with which wheels are braking; it's more about front shocks. It's a summation of moments thing (engineering). The nose will dive whether you only have front brakes or you pull the rear emergency brake (don't try this).

Yes, but he paid $130 for OEM.

Are you saying that buying OEM pads is going 'cheap'? I purchased OEM because they work good, last a long time and have very minimal dust. Why would I want to spend more? $50 a set and they will probably last me 7+ years.

no, typically I wouldn't consider OEM to be cheap. though, there are some vehicles/manufactures that the aftermarket parts are better.

I was more speaking in general. I see a lot of people on this site, and in person that want to go as cheap as possible with their brakes. for as long as they last, and as important as they are, paying for quality parts seems the reasonable way to do it.

How can you get 7 or 10 years out of brakes? I'll be 3 years on the road in March and I'm pretty sure my front pads will be gone by then (currently @ 51,000km/36,700mi). At my last oil change I was told I had 4mm left on the fronts. I assume I will also need to do rotors at that time.

3.5 mile commute to work :)

I used to put on 20-25k miles a year, now I'm around 10k. A lot of people have gone 70k on OEM pads. Of course it also depends on driving habits, towing, stop and go traffic, etc.

36k seems pretty low though.

I just swapped out the original pads at just almost 114K miles. this is on my 06. not sure if the 5th gens will go as far or not
