Just Curious; Does the rear wind deflector make much difference?

Pretty sure it is mostly designed to clear off the rear window when it is up to reduce dirt/dust buildup, but also generates a "pseudo" wind-barrier to prevent exhaust fumes from getting sucked in. From what I know at least!

My experience it helps keep the window cleaner by directing the wind and see better out the back when it's raining, the spoiler help s water run off by directing air over the window. I took it off to paint it and noticed the difference.

That's exactly the purpose of the rear deflector on my old cars when they didn't have rear wipers.

That's what I'v noticed. Slow on a dirt road = dirty rear window - first time up to speed and it cleans right off.

My ‘01 has one.
As mentioned above, my guess would be that its purpose is to help clear the back window of dust, etc., and to help keep exhaust out when running the the back window down. But I'm not "in the know", and am just guessing.
Regarding part of this, and not to be argumentative or derail the thread, but mine doesn't seem so light in the rear, and I love that. Why? Because mine never ceases to amaze me offroad, going places that I would never, ever dare go in a 2WD pickup. I don't push my luck too far, have never gotten stuck, and saying that will probably jinx me, but I love how this thing handles rough terrain (hills, rocks, moderate mud, 18" deep creek crossings, etc.), and even snow/ice. I know, I know - next time I go offroad, I will get stuck and have to pull out my come-a-long and 200' of rope, that I always keep in the back. :biggrin2:

has anyone plugged the holes? if so, what did you use? id love to take mine off, but then i know i will have bolt holes.
in the past ive seen use plastic plugs on other chassis. im thinking i could also get some sort stainless bolts and seal the holes with nylon washers or something. evenutally ill buy bertman's hilux surf rear spoiler.

I like without....yet doubt it really matters...I do drive a fair amount with sunroof open and back down part way, I get no fumes, just an awesome breeze from sunroof I can control via rear window.

It was an option on all trims/years. Most had them other than very lightly optioned ones (came as a package with the running boards, roof rack and hitch most often).

Maybe off topic but my third taillight stopped working for some reason last year. I was concerned about getting a fix it ticket so I bondoed the light cutout in the fin smooth. I think it looks great and nobody can see the dead light.

My 02 SR5 has it too. To me it's part of the signature 4Runner look. They look kinda strange without them IMHO.
