Just figured out my trail prem doesn't have kdss :(

What are some things I can do to mimic it or make the ride better both on road and off road?

Is it even possible to add kdss?

Don't take this the wrong way... but it literally takes 10 seconds to look under the front fender / wheel well to figure out if you were buying one with or without...

Maybe its just me, but I generally get heavy into the details before spending this type of cash on something, I like to know what I am buying... I dont have the time or the money to do it twice or screw it up.

That said... i'm pretty content with even how a base SR5 drives... I wouldn't loose too much sleep over it. I presume it doesn't drive any better or worse since you just discovered this piece of information... I presume you were also enjoying it before that as well... so just enjoy the damn thing...

At least you got a rear locker right...?

Just drive it. Spend the $$ on upgrading your shocks instead and get the similar ride and handling characteristics. I have a Trail without KDSS and have never told myself "You idiot, you should have bought one with it".... I drove several with and without and it just wasn't that big of a deal... YMMV..

Did you get your 4Runner at one of those new drive-thru Toyota dealerships?
 
As long as you didn't pay for it, I'd try not to worry about it. I have KDSS and while I like it, non-KDSS has its advantages too. What you gain in handling does contribute to a bit harsher ride over rougher roads and large bumps. All in what you prefer I guess, but if it was not bothering you before you found out, a little time should "heal this wound".
 
It is not misinformation on the lower clearance of KDSS. I smack that low end front all the time with stock height. Even simple dirt roads with a crown and rocks running down the middle can be a problem. When I air down, clearance is a major consideration of how much air to let out. Just saying........
 
I have a non-KDSS TEP and I don't miss it or feel I'm missing out on anything. I drove one with KDSS and yes, stock vs stock there is a difference but I already had plans to change springs and shocks so I knew the mushy ride wouldn't stick around long. I do see it's advantages but I also see a possible failure point that's not necessarily a cheap fix. I also was concerned about the low hanging lines and other components of the KDSS system hanging down.

OP- upgrade your shocks and possibly springs as well, and you won't even remember what KDSS is.

Since you are [MENTION=128244]minimalist[/MENTION] you should be happy.:D As for on-road handling, I found a good alignment and good air pressure in the tires (39psi in BFG KO2) is all I need. It does well both on the curvy backroads and on highways and that's with over 90k miles on the shocks. Off-road with lower psi it is great though I do miss the swaybar disconnects on my Rubicon.

^^^^This for the most part... I wouldn’t stress too much at all, so long as they didn’t charge you for it.

You can spend a little money with some minor modding, and get the ride almost the same. You would never know the difference. Do a lot of research on here, ask some well thought out questions, and these guys will lead you down the correct path. It’s an excellent forum.

I hate to say it but you are SOL if you really want KDSS and it's not on the vehicle you have. I won't argue merit of having it vs not though as you'll get a lot of that I'm sure. The system is added at the factory and is not a port or dealer add on.

Your only have two options at this point.

1). Sell it and try again
2). Research suspensions and upgrade to that system which gives you the ride you are most looking for and pretend that you have KDSS
