Well its tune up time again :Cry: and need plugs wires just again find it funny that a v6 only uses 3 wires.

Well yeah smart design using 3 coils to fire the plugs directly then 1 wire off each to fire the other plugs, reduces the problem potential of wires somewhat. :cowboy:

Umm. No. They might as well went coil over plug on all plugs. I still find it strange. Me and my brother are converting out drag/street DSM to coil over plug as we speak. I'm not doing it to just 2 plugs. Don't make sense.

How about 8 coils with 16 wires!
 
It would be cool if we could change over to a 6 coil over plug set instead of a 3 coil over. I wonder how much extra work that would entail and if there would be an advantage.
 
Weird but it works. These engine are already among the longest lasting gassers to ever be created. Why screw with an obviously tried and true ignition system?
 
The purpose of the extra firing is the answer. Know what it is?? :cowboy:

If you're referring to wasted spark, that's what I'm getting at. Not only does it wear out the plugs quicker but the coils are working twice as hard with no benefit. It was a "benefit" 30 years ago when the distributor was being phased out. It seems like the design could have been slightly altered to fire the coil on plug and then fire the plug on wire separately. But I suppose at that point there may as well be 6 coils.

3 times more coils than a distributor (better spark control, no more single failure point), half the price of doing all 6. Seems pretty reasonable?

I don't care how many coils there are....I wish they would have put more engineering into the head gasket! :yo:

Oh I'm not arguing that. Just stating the realities of such a system. There are advantages and disadvantages to every system of ignition.
 
125000k+ miles, you think I should replace the coils or just plugs and wires? Engine seams to be running smooth enough. Already had the timing belt and waterpump done twice. Its a kit toyota doesn't give a choice.
 
There are some that convert the wasted spark to coil on plug. As long as the driver transistors can handle the load you just parallel the 12 coil wires and install the single coils on the two spark plugs that that one coil and its plug wire fed. Go junking and get coils off a 4.7 mopar or a ford. You just have to figure out how to seal off the spark plug tube.
