That's because, as mentioned above, it only works on higher trim 4Runners.
Tried this on my Canadian 2020 Off-Road and it worked !
PTS 4runners shut down with door open, including Viper and Compustar and of course OEM.
Hmm, could be right - not sure if Toyota has done something to prevent that but my installer buddy has put the Viper products into my friends PTS cars and they don't do that... the product does default to that value but they can be programmed for push to start vehicles otherwise (button must be pushed to the ignition on selection after door unlock). Or technically you could still start it with all of the doors open too if its programmed to ignore that as well, but any brake pedal depression and off goes the engine. The security sequence always begins with pressing door unlock and having the prox fob present so its impossible to get the vehicle into drive in any manner.
Unsure how you would exit and leave it running to jet into a store I'll have to ask them... Presumably press the auto start button when you pull up and put into park, press ignition off before opening the door then exit and lock the vehicle. On mine its programmed as such (press remote start, remove ignition key - then open the door, close it and must lock it too otherwise the sequence isn't completed and it turns off after 30 seconds), it will only run for 5 mins on that sequence but remote starting otherwise gives you 10 mins before it shuts off again (time period also programmable).:zoom:

I ran the question up the food chain years ago as to why most any manufacturer remote start and stays running when you open a door (push button start). Number one answer was stupid people who get in, drive to wherever, shut engine off and find themselves stranded because the damn key is still at home
It's not programmable, it's a Toyota/Lexus thing roughly 2002 and up. The firmware driving the remote start bypass is just expoiting the OEM start feature in the BCM.
There are other vehicles out there that do not shut down that are PTS. Nissan, Honda depending on firmware, Hyundai/Kia, etc.

2019 Pro and 2019 Limited in Seattle, no dice. Too bad.
Does anyone know if this can be installed at the dealer? While I know there are aftermarket systems that people love, for me not having to carry a second fob is more important than the engine shutting off when you open the door.
I may be spending time in a much colder place this winter, so would be a nice thing to have given how slowly the 4Runner heats up IMO.

NO this is not true for the 2020 SR5 premium and down! I researched it, and it is not available for these models. It starts with the Limited and above. SO, it does not matter what you do with the key fob, it will not work. There is not anything available as of yet for the 2020 model. NOT YET...........
I'm in the same boat as you (2019 Limited/Seattle) and I have the same question. I'm going to ask the next time I go in for a service, but given how little I drive these days, that might be a while.

I'm pretty sure that is not correct. Of the remote start vehicles I've owned and rented that work normally and stay on when you open the door, you still have to press the start button to enable the vehicle to be driven... shift out of park, etc. If you do not have the key in the vehicle when you push the start button, it will not allow the vehicle to be taken out of park and on some it will not unlock the steering wheel.

Here are the instructions. It's crazy. First, remove every panel and the radio ... seems like a lot of destruction.
OK, what are the top aftermarket brands? I seem to remember one that could use a smartphone so you don't need the second fob ...

I wish I found a remote start on mine
Brand wise, Compustar witrh t-harness and Drone smartphone integration.
Best Buy has a package installed that pops up on deal of the day for around $300
Compustar 2-Way CSX Remote Start System w/ LTE Module + Installation
You can also use the OEM remote pressing lock 3x to start if you for some reason do not want to use the app.

100% agreement. I tried to state that, but I am getting a different reply. It seems like it would work with my 2020 SR5P, but it does not. The remote start is not available YET to install, but I hope it comes at some point.
My 2015 Trail Edition Premium has it. After I bought it I noticed a small sticker on drivers side door stating it had it. Many salesman these days have no idea what they are selling. I lived in northern Michigan when I had my 2nd generation 4R and installed a Viper, best move ever. The distance the Viper would start the car was amazing vs the short range of the factory installed unit. Aggravating that is shuts off upon opening the door but still better than not having it.

Directed has a newish firmware that allows for takeover with smart key vehicles. Gonna see if I can find someone to flash my DS4 for me.
