Just picked up a '98 Gen3 4Runner Limited

- The mileage is at 217k and the timing belt has been done (@ 158k).

It is in the shop getting an oil change, hanging the 4WD fluids serviced (front/rear differential and transfer case), valve cover gaskets replaced and the front brakes serviced and discs replaced.

I plan to remove the running boards, and replace the tires. I'm keeping the stock wheels on it unless I can source some that I like locally for cheap.

Once all of that is sorted later today, I would like to look at redoing the suspension. There is a lot of play in it, and I would like to get it back to OEM or even beef it up a little, and maybe do a small lift and leveling kit.

I'm in Tulsa, OK, so if anyone here knows of a specialty shop or has any experience with this, please PM me.

Any thoughts or info is appreciated.

Very Nice! I just bought a 97 Limited with 279k Klms, removing the running boards makes a huge difference at the appearance. Lets see some pics!
 
Has some oxidation on the hood and roof, but no rust to speak of and runs pretty well. Its primary use will be a 15-mile round trip for work, and the occasional 100-mile drive to OKC or AR.

The drivers seat has the requisite bolster tear, but I'm planning on either buying some cheap neoprene sat covers, or ordering some online. Not a real need at the moment.

Got it back today: just over $1k in service, but should be well worth it in the long run.

- front brake discs replaced and fluid swapped out
- full 4x4 fluid service
- replace the valve cover gaskets
- oil change

Next immediate step, probably on Monday morning, is a single din Bluetooth head unit and a single din cubby below it.

Will probably duct tape the seat bolster and then pick up some neoprene covers for the front seats. Weathertech front, rear and cargo mats after that.

And I have to source a front fog light assembly as well. Might put a WTB ad on the classifieds here.
 
Went ahead and had a BT enabled Kenwood head unit installed. They checked the alarm while they were at it, and now the keyless entry chirps once when locking and twice when unlocking. Now I'm not playing the guessing game when I'm getting out of the car.
 
Looks great, shot of mine without the running boards, pulled them off Thursday. Love the looks of it.

If no records of radiator being replaced within the last 8yrs then that should be priority. Koyo 1998a is the one you want. Also with the mileage id replace the lower ball joints with oem toyota. Your welcome. Love Debbie Downer. Ps truck looks good
 
Thanks guys. Taking the running boards totally changed the look of the truck. I want to do a suspension upgrade back to OEM or slightly more, with maybe a 1" - 1.5" lift, leveled off. Nothing too crazy, as its main use is back and forth to work.

How is the condition of front lower all joints? This is the most important thing to replace in a 3rd gen 4runner. Make sure you get OEM ball joints (Camelback toyota in AZ) have these: Each like $85 with free shipping when you hit $150.

When you get each side of the LBJ that are the $90.22 is that all you'll need for that or do you need to buy the bolts too?

Get the bolts as well; I read somewhere that some failures were actually attributed to the bolts and not the LBJ itself... It's only a $10 item for a peace of mind.
