Just picked up my 2012 Trail Edition ... and started modding

So, I'm new to the whole T4R community - I've always been a Jeep guy. Anyway, I was upgrading from my 1998 Jeep Cherokee and looking for another fullsize suv that could come close in terms of off-road prowess - enter the 4Runner.

I was lucky and found a brand new one locally that hadn't arrived, but was scheduled to be delivered in 2 days of my walking into the dealership! So, I picked it up day before yesterday and have been driving it / lurking these forums ever since.

Just a few details:
Magnetic Grey
Non-KDSS (I regret this a little, but I was in a rush and it was here)
Entune Nav

I have to say, the new Entune Nav is pretty freaking sweet - fortunately I had tethering enabled on my iPhone already so it was a breeze to setup and I have a 3 year trial(?!) of the services for free.

So far I'm think a stock(265/70) size set of General Grabber AT2s (for these are the best tires I have ever owned) and Satoshi grille (courtesy Adio3x). No real plans beyond that... yet

Nice. We picked up the same truck + kdss last night. Shorty antenna, husky liners and ATs are on my short list but I'm going to try to stop there (for a while at least).

Looks like a load warrior.......no? I was thinking of adding the extensions on mine to make it a mega....

I just picked up a black '12 Trail in Boston a few weeks ago. Enjoying it very much. Good luck with yours.
 
My friends are bugging me to add running boards - hard to get in and out of back seat without them. Happy to find a Trail in the northeast - was preparing to drive one back from Denver.

I'm jealous, I've been waiting for the 2012 TEs to arrive in Denver for months... I want the KDSS + Entune. Glad to hear that you like the Entune, as I've been on the fence about that, but leaning towards it.

Actually, the load and mega warriors are two different racks. The Mega is a wider and longer than the load. This mega did have the extension and the spare tire carrier (both from yakima) but I took them off when I put it on the T4R.

For those who are interested, the mega fits perfectly if you want a rack that is the exact dimensions of the factory roof rails (atleast on the TE). It stops just short of the sunroof in the front, just short of the sat antenna in the rear, and is slightly wider than the stock rails - I think it looks as good as any rack that uses the stock cross rails can.

Yeah they are hard to come by up here as I found out. Also, KDSS is not offered as an option in this region and the only 3 colors that are offered in this region are black, magnetic, and silver. It kind of sucks, TBH.

If you ever want to try that Trail out, my friends and I fairly regularly offroad up near Marblehead, Ma. We've got an FJ, Rubicon, and my TE that are all brand new (so we tend to take it kind of easy when we take these out).

The Entune is awesome if you have a tethering plan with your phone (or if you jailbreak the iphone :nerd:). It relies on your phone for it's internet connection. But I will tell you that having things like Pandora as a native app on the head unit is much more convenient than having it just streaming via bluetooth to a headunit, to me atleast.

And though some people have reported problems with the nav directions, I have had none - infact quite the opposite. I have been nothing but impressed with the nav - in particular the integration with xm traffic. It actually works! (atleast in Boston). I was going down route 1 yesterday and my nav alerted me there was a traffic jam ahead. At the time, I couldn't see any cars backed up so I wrote it off - but sure enough - I crested a hill and bam, traffic jam.

Even last night, I was coming back on 1A and there was a horrible wreck right outside of Salem, it alerted me a half mile to mile in advance and asked me if I wanted to re-route. I chose to, and all I saw were the flashing lights from the police cars and fire engines in the distance. Pretty impressive.

congrats on your new Trail. you'll love it. maybe Toyota's regional allocations have changed, but i got my salsa red Trail with nav & KDSS in portland almost exactly two years ago. :shrug:

if you don't mind my asking, where are you offroading near marblehead? i'm down that way from time to time... feel free to pm me if you don't want to post publicly.

If you want the tires to fill out your fender well a bit more, you can up-size to 275/70s with no lift and no rub. However you will lose about .5 mpg on average. Good luck with the mods!:reddance:

I had thought of going with the same size so as to not have to worry about the spare - will a 275/70 spare fit in the stock location as well? I'd rather not carry it on the roof with my current rack. It could more than handle it, but I use it for other things.
 
You can still use the same spare. Tire problems are rare and a slightly different size is not going to do anything as I imagine you would not be running on it for a long time, and not engaging the locker either driving around on the pavement.
