JWaldz '99 Adventure Build - Dual Locked | Geared | Mid-Travel | 35s | Armored

Hey ARK let me know if need any help man with your future maintenance. I would like to learn a few things.

I shouldn't need too much help.. Most of them are single person jobs. The other harder ones like the rear bearings and timing belt maintenance will require some help but I've already got that worked out with a friend of mine who usually helps me with the kind of stuff requiring a press or extra hands and skills. You're more than welcome to come hang out and learn some stuff when I do my maintenance though. All the fluid flushes/changes are pretty self explanatory and most likely will just end up doing them on week days after work. The longer jobs will require the weekend. Where you live?

Damn dude that's a hell of a list to complete in just over a month, good luck!

Oh trust me, I know! I've got a picture of this in my garage to encourage me :D

You mind sharing what setup you ordered for the CBI? I am ordering one in March, and have no idea how I want it

No problem..

 • Plated
 • Full Swing Out Package
 • Single Can Carrier
 • 2" Body Lift Option
 • Limited Flare Option
 • Custom Quarter Panel Protection Tubing
 • Bare Metal

I chose bare metal mainly bc of time. I want to have it before my trip and I know it would take forever if it were pc'd. Pics are a representation of the custom side tubing they're gonna do.

Directions show we'll most likely be going through Dallas and Fort Worth via I30. If we plan on stopping there to eat or something I'll let ya know.

Took care of a couple things on that list tonight. Cleaned my MAF and Throttle Body as well as dremeled the D-Ring down to an O(ish) shape lol. For 170k it wasn't too bad, but glad it's clean now. Tip to anyone doing this, wear some sort of mask. Cus I got high as a kite from the damn fumes from those cleaners. I had to go sit down for a minute!! haha

Continuing on with the maintenance.. I finally fixed my rear, single cardan, u-joint. I was pretty sure that this was what was causing the issues I was having and upon getting the u-joint out I was 100% possitive. One of the caps had a fracture/break in it and all the bearing needles were gone. This along with wear and water seeping in over time made it really worn out. I'd actually suggest the maintenance to anyone over 150k even if it's not showing symptoms of failure. Ok, enough blabbing.. on to pics :D

Damn! That's one old busted Ujoint. I bought all new ones a little over 2 years ago right after I lifted, then got under the truck only to discover my current ones weren't that bad. I just keep em greased up and they are still lookin good. My new ujoints have been collecting dust in my passenger door pocket ever since lol still waiting for my currents to go out...

Did you just hammer yours out?

lol, well don't wait till it's too late like I did. It will make driving MISERABLE!! I'm guessing my last trip to the offroad park did it in. It didn't do it on the way back but the day after I could tell something was up. Yea, used an impact socket to fit the hole and went hammering away. My buddy had done it before so it helps he knew what to do during removal and installing. Wasn't that bad.

hahaha yeaaaah I'm a procrastinator at times. I'll know when it goes out though, then I'll drop the driveshaft and replace em all. I gotta drop the rear axle too to fix one of my panhard bolts that is completely stuck in there. Figure I'll do it all at once. I have all the parts anyway... so that'll be a project when the time comes. Oh man I can't wait!!!! (obvious complete sarcasm lol).

Good maintenance though! FYI I've kept mine going so long with the Mystic #2 JT6 grease. Give it a shot, a tube is like 8 bucks.

Wow, that thing is shot!

FYI, the rear single u-joint slip section is the same as the older Toyota trucks and 4Runner's. I noticed mine had some resistance, so I grabbed an old spare from my 1st Gen 4Runner and the splines were the same. Just make sure to reinstall the u-joints in the correct phase.

There's a lot more older trucks out the trail, so it's nice to know that you can borrow the part if you need to (or grab a spare at the junk yard).

EDIT: I think the driveshaft flange bolt pattern might be different, but if you have a triple drilled flange that's not an issue.

downpour11 - I need to get a grease gun. I'm gonna try and and remember to lube them all every oil change or so.

Dirtco - It was in deed! You make a good point. There's a couple '97s at the junk yard that I've been meaning to go snag parts from. I'll make sure to snag a spare if it's there. My flange is triple drilled. I was sure to buy one when I set the rear diff up with the 4.88s. Good looking out.

Next on the list is fuel filter. Should come in next week. Then gonna do oil change and diff fluid changes.

This wheel combo with the rock ring finally gives me an idea on what my beadlocks will look like on my rig. Thanks ARKRWLR.

Gets me even more excited to get the adapters.

What was the final offset on the wheels and tire size? were you using spacers?
Did you have the body lift at this point and how was the rubbing up front on the firewall with such a low offset.

Looked great.

I kinda miss those wheels, they're hard to find these days. The center bore was too small though so I had to run lug centric spacers. It rode like ass and bump steer was horrible. I'm really wanting a set of beadlocks though. I think I might make the plunge for some after my bday later this year. Maybe try to find some slightly used ones or something.

Thanks for the response.

The bump steer was because of the lug centric spacers? or the offset?

Trying to get an idea of what the rubbing was like on those. Those tires were 285's?

The adapters that I need to run with my beadlocks will put the 16x8" out to a 3" BS. When I eventually get 35's Im trying to see the headache i'm in for with the firewall without a bodylift and the low offset.

If your looking at beadlocks, you may have to step up to 17's. Not sure if your opposed to that or not.

Main reason i'm making mine work is I want to stay 16's and if I ever do a full width axle swap someday I can still run the wheels with them being 8x6.5.

BTW, what beadlocks are you looking at currently?

Yea, bump steer and bad wandering was b/c of the spacers. They were 285/70R17s. I wanna say they rubbed a little but I hadn't done much trimming then. I've looked at beadlocks but haven't narrowed it down to anything specific. If I can find a set of used beadlocks that will fit when the time comes I'll go that route. I've thought about how I can stick with 16's. OMF comes to mind.. True beadlocked lx450 wheels would be tits :D

Oh absolutely. Always liked Bruces beadlocked 5 stars.

Factory beadlocked always looks great.

For trimming I know I will have to tub the firewall. I figure if I leave an extra inch of clearance from my 33's I should be ready to go when the 35's come later on. Even after pounding the firewall quite a bit, I still get into the corner of firewall by the body mount with these tires on full lock stuffed. granted I didn't have UCA's that would allow more caster and I was only running a 1" top out spacer. We will see what happens with the new front setup after I get it aligned. I have a set of 1.25 spidertrax spacers im pulling off the 06 so I can get everything clearanced prior to commiting to the 1 3/8" adapters for the beadlocks.
